Four supervisors from the 88th Readiness Division, Fort McCoy were honored by the Department of Defense for their Patriotic Support at an awards ceremony on May 20. The Wisconsin Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DoD) office, announced that Kelly McNeese, Rochelle Vanier, Kevin Zavala and Shalanda Harlan, were honored with Patriot Awards in recognition of their extraordinary support of their employee, Sergeant Jennifer Coley serving in the U.S. Army Reserves.

The 88th Readiness Division serves primarily as a military unit staffed with soldiers and civilian staff. Some of these civilian staff also serve as drilling reservists, known as “twice the citizen.” Each time one of these soldiers is deployed it creates a vacancy in civilian positions in which duties must be covered during that period. In this role, they serve as an employer.

Sergeant Coley serves in the 467th Combat and Operational Stress Control (COSC) unit based in Madison. Specialized units such as these, assist soldiers by preventing, identifying, and managing the effects of combat and operational stress reactions in order to minimize adverse effects of combat stress on service members.

Sergeant Coley nominated her supervisors, “to show my appreciation for all the support the 88th has given me throughout the years of my career, my professional life as a soldier, and personal life as a military spouse. They have mentored me in many ways in keeping me motivated and contributing their expertise and wisdom to my professional and personal growth. For this, I am forever grateful.”

One of the awardees, Rochelle Vanier said of Jennifer, “she performs a critical service to the 88th Division soldiers by providing expertise as an incapacitation pay specialist. Her work ensures that claims of soldiers who are injured while on military duty status and unable to work are processed expeditiously. Her dedication and attention to detail have resulted in a higher accuracy of claims and a reduced processing time.”

The awards were presented at the 88th Readiness Division Town Hall meeting hosted by MG Joseph Ricciardi in front of 150 soldiers and civilian employees plus approximately 100 watching online.

Major General Joseph Ricciardi, Kelly McNeese, Kevin Zavala, Rochelle Vanier, SGT Jennifer Coley and ESGR representative John Gessner (L to R). Shalanda Harlan, not pictured, will be presented to her award at a later date.

On 4 May, ESGR Rep Tom Ramsden, Area 3 announced that five leaders in the Rock County Sheriff’s Office had been presented with Patriot awards in recognition of extraordinary support of their employees who serve in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. The presentation took place at the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, Janesville. Those who received Patriot Awards were Sergeant Maria Amador, Captain Nicholas Brown, Corporal Jeremy Hoff, Corporal Tim Mauerman, and Sergeant Robert Scott.

According to Ramsden, “All five of these dedicated public servants were nominated for this prestigious national award by Specialist Adrian Diaz, who works as a Correctional Officer in the Rock County Jail and serves as a Military Intelligence Analyst in the Army Reserves. The Patriot Award is presented to employers who not only hire National Guard and Reserve members but demonstrate superior support to the military employee and their family. The Reserve Forces are the cornerstone of our national defense. The Rock County Sheriff’s Office has provided outstanding support and cooperation and has exhibited a patriotic spirit which is reflected in the significance of being a recipient of multiple Patriot Awards. These leaders have consistently demonstrated an understanding of and support for Adrian’s military career and have taken steps to ensure his sustainment with the force in times of service to the community and the country.”

On 26 May, Mary Thomson, as the Manager and Owner of Leader of the Pack Doggie Daycare LLC, Sun Prairie, was presented with the Seven Seals Award for her demonstrated support for Army Reservist Carson Heimerl. The company, primarily Mary Thompson, has consistently supported his service in the Army Reserves and is a previous recipient of the Patriot Award.
Carson says, “Mary ensures all relevant dates are blocked off, preventing any conflicts with work scheduling. If my first line leader requests my presence in advance of a drill, I am granted time off promptly, and Mary covers the floor in my absence, removing the need for me to find coverage. Even when I need to make medical appointments, I am allowed to take an extended break or a half day allowing me to attend these appointments. During annual training periods, I receive approved leave without issue, and they have offered to compensate me for any potential loss of income. While serving in the military, contributions to my health savings account continue uninterrupted. When I attended B6 ASI school for three months and a manager resigned during that time, Mary contacted me to offer the vacant position, despite my return being several weeks away. When returning from my three-month B6 ASI school, I was offered 14 days off before having to return to work.”

A Wisconsin company received the top Department of War Award for National Guard and Reserve Support! 🙌

Last month, acting on behalf of the Secretary of War, Rear Adm. Richard S. Lofgren, the acting Chief of the Navy Reserve, presented the Employer Support Freedom Award to Mike Hsu, chief executive officer of Kimberly-Clark. The ceremony recognized Kimberly-Clark for its industry-leading support of military veteran, National Guard and Reserve Component employees.

The Freedom Award is the highest honor the U.S. government bestows upon employers for their support of military personnel. Kimberly-Clark was one of only fifteen companies selected from a pool of over 1,000 nominations, a testament to its robust support systems and a corporate culture deeply rooted in service.

Honored to recognize Anna Zizzo, Tony Bueno, and Annemarie Domurat for their outstanding support and leadership.

Alongside Lt. Quinn Tarpey (Army National Guard), who submitted the nomination and was present for the presentation.

Anna, Tony, and Annemarie demonstrated exceptional support before, during, and after the 2024–2025 deployment. Their willingness to provide flexibility during the mobilization process, maintain support throughout the deployment, and create space for a smooth transition back to civilian life reflects a deep commitment to those they work alongside.

Their understanding, cooperation, and proactive approach significantly reduced the challenges often associated with leaving for—and returning from—deployment.

This level of support exemplifies leadership in action and is truly deserving of recognition.

Good to see another Wisconsin company being recognized for its support of the Guard and Reserve.
