Professor Preeti Chopra has published a chapter "The Grass is Green in the Streets of Pondicherry: Images of Dual Power, Cultural Entanglement and Blind Spots in an Indian City."

The chapter explores guidebooks, architecture, and what Chopra calls "creeping colonialism" in the colonial context and cultural encounters in Pondicherry under French colonial rule. Her work appears in "Envisioning the Indian City: Spaces of Encounter in Goa, Calcutta, Pondicherry, and Chandigarh" (Jadavpur University Press, 2025), edited by Supriya Chaudhuri, Nandini Das, Iain Jackson, and Ian H. Magedera.

Ph.D. candidate Ehsan Behbahani-Nia has been awarded the Archaeological Institute of America's prestigious 2026 John R. Coleman Traveling Fellowship. This fellowship will support Ehsan's research as he investigates the movement of Greek stonemasons and workshops across the Mediterranean during the late Archaic and early Classical periods. Congrats, Ehsan! 🎉

Congrats, graduates! 🎉🎓 To all who have earned a degree, major, or certificate in Art History: it has been a great pleasure working with you, and we look forward with pride and excitement to see what comes next in your journeys.

This year, we celebrated the conferral of 27 certificates, 19 bachelor’s degrees, and 5 Ph.D. degrees. We were also privileged to recognize four outstanding students—both graduating undergraduates and continuing doctoral candidates—with awards for exceptional academic achievement.

Ph.D. candidate Xiaoyan Jiang has been awarded a 2026 Paul Klee Research Fellowship from the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, Switzerland.

Established to support innovative Klee studies, the fellowship funds a one-month residency working intensively with the ZPK's collection and archives. Jiang will use the opportunity to conduct primary research for her dissertation chapter on Klee's student and Bauhaus artist Lena Bergner.

Ph.D. students Dehlia Mitchell-Gray and Hao Wu have been selected to participate in the 2026 Chinese Object Study Workshops, to be held at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) from August 17–21, 2026. The program offers graduate students in Chinese Art History an immersive, object-centered experience with museum collections across North America.

This year’s workshop will focus on ROM’s extensive and diverse collection of images of domestic gods. Participants will engage closely with the collection, examining the visual and material dimensions of domestic ritual objects and gaining hands-on experience in object-based research.

Ph.D. Candidate Mirella Maria has been awarded the International Division Graduate Student Summer Fieldwork Award along with the BLAC Foundation Supplemental Award to support her summer 2026 research in Brazil!

Mirella's dissertation, "Digital Curatorial Quilombismo: A Comparative Study of Digital Curatorial Strategies in Afrodiasporic Art Spaces in Brazil, Colombia, and Puerto Rico," examines how Afro-Brazilian, Colombian, and Puerto Rican museums develop digital curatorial strategies that honor material culture while navigating algorithmic systems that marginalize Black cultural content.

This summer, she will conduct fieldwork across Salvador, Brasília, Goiás, and São Paulo — visiting eight institutions and interviewing curators, educators, and community leaders. Her work has been published by Routledge and MASP, and presented at LASA, Harvard's Hutchins Center, and institutions across Europe.

Ph.D. candidate Levi Sherman has been awarded a 2026–27 Todd Walker Fellowship at the University of Arizona Center for Creative Photography.

The fellowship will support Levi’s research on Todd Walker’s intersecting innovations in offset printing and digital art. This investigation is part of a larger project on the advent of computer graphics and desktop publishing in the field of artists’ books.

Students in Art History 468, "Frank Lloyd Wright," spent a full day at Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio, on April 24. In addition to taking a "behind the scenes" tour with researchers from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, students had the opportunity to join one of two workshops. The first was on "Pattern Design," led by Taliesin trained architect Ari Georges, and students created projects inspired by plants in and around Taliesin. The second group worked with Emily Butler of the Foundation on developing adaptive reuse plans for Midway Barn on the Taliesin property.

This amazing experience was generously supported by funds associated with the Frank Lloyd Wright professorship and the Buenger Field Experience Fund.

Ph.D. student Defne Oruç recently traveled to the University of Cambridge to co-chair the session “Intermedia Dialogues in Art and Architecture” at the Association for Art History conference with Maryluna Santos Giraldo (Tulane University) on April 8th, 2026. Their session explored how intermedia practices and material translations engage displacement as a means of registering the longer history of mobilities, and aesthetic and socio-political exchanges in the Global South.

The Department of Art History hosted a stimulating and well-attended Senior Honors Thesis Colloquium Event last Thursday, with presentations by Sarah Kyla Banks on “Hilma of Klimt: Utopian Visions (Professor Daniel Spaulding is thesis advisor) and Rachel Reichard on “Exploring Space and Body in Auguste Rodin’s Assemblages through Devised Movement Theatre” (Professor Nancy Rose Marshall is thesis advisor). These thought-provoking presentations were followed by a lively Q&A with an enthusiastic audience consisting of faculty, students, proud faculty advisors, friends and family.
