🌈 At the Common Council meeting on Tuesday, June 9, the City of Madison officially recognized June 2026 as Pride Month. This acknowledgment celebrates the broader history of the fight for LGBTQ+ equality, highlighting events from the Black Nite Brawl to the Stonewall Riots.

🌈 In 1975, Madison became the first city in Wisconsin and one of the earliest in the country to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation by amending its Equal Opportunities Ordinance. In 1990, the City established Wisconsin's first domestic partnership registry through ordinance, granting limited rights to same-sex couples.

🌈 The City also acknowledges that Black and Brown LGBTQ+ individuals have played crucial roles in advancing social change and shifting cultural norms. Since 2023, at least a quarter of the alder districts represented on the Madison Common Council have included LGBTQ+ alders.

🌈 To learn more about the City of Madison's rich and proud LGBTQ+ history, read the full honoring resolution here: https://madison.legistar.com/ViewReport.ashx?M=R&N=Text&GID=205&ID=6812450&GUID=763FC43F-B12F-4753-BA63-A3140EBF271D&Title=Legislation+Text.
