City Manager Jack Sweitzer and City Clerk Myrtle Chamberlain confer to see whether there was actually one second left on the clock in the Michigan-Western Michigan football game, circa 1958. OK, that’s not actually what they were doing, but Sweitzer served as the City of Madison Heights’ second city manager, following Donald Smith, our first city manager, who resigned in September 1957. Sweitzer, who had previously served as city manager of Halton, Texas, took over the position on December 1, 1957, but was fired a year later following a dispute with City Council. Chamberlain, whom we have previously featured in one of our posts, was our city’s first city clerk and served in that position until she retired in 1961.
