Artist’s rendering of the proposed site of Paramount Engineering, 32100 Stephenson Highway. The complex, built in the late 1950s, was later home to Parker Chemical Company. The site was acquired by Henkel in 1987 and today houses Henkel’s Adhesive Technologies facility, which employs more than 250 people, making it one of Madison Heights’ largest employers.

Royal Oak Township, which was created by an act of the Michigan Territorial Council in the early 1830s, originally encompassed a 36-square-mile section of Oakland County but gradually diminished in size as cities incorporated and separated from the township. The cities that now occupy what was once Royal Oak Township are Royal Oak, Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Clawson, Hazel Park, Oak Park and Madison Heights.

The last remaining Sign of the Beefcarver restaurant – the original location on Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak – is set to close its doors this weekend after almost 70 years in business. Construction of the Twelve Towns Relief Drain, Twelve Mile Road and Stephenson, 1962. The $47.5 million infrastructure project, a network of sewers designed to carry heavy stormwater, was a joint effort of 14 local municipalities, including Madison Heights.

By 1922, the Royal Oak Township school census, which included all children between the ages of five and 20, showed that District No. 10 (Madison) had 82 children, while District No. 4 (Lamphere) had 46.

Hand-drawn map showing the city boundaries of the City of Madison Heights, 1968. The map was included in the Madison Heights Junior Women’s Club’s “Community Improvement Program Report, 1966–1968,” which detailed the history of the original Madison Heights Heritage Book. The idea of publishing a Heritage Book – which covered the history of our area from the early 1800s and the Royal Oak Township era to incorporation in 1955 and our first ten years as a city – was first conceived by the club in May 1964, and after more than 4,000 hours of work by more than two dozen volunteers, the first Madison Heights Heritage Book was printed in April 1967. The Madison Heights Historical Commission salutes the Madison Heights Junior Women’s Club for chronicling our city’s early history and preserving it for future generations to come, including ours.

Under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Court, a Traffic Improvement School was started in Madison Heights in September 1962, with 88 students completing the program in the first year of operation. The school was self-supporting, with operating expenses met by tuition paid by violators, some of whom were sentenced to attend the school by surrounding communities.

The first school in what is now the Lamphere District was started in 1834. The Lamphere School District was officially organized on June 13, 1844, and was named for Archibald Lamphere, whose children attended the school. The first teacher was Miss Fidelia Tillottson, whose salary was $1 a month, in addition to room and board provided by various members of the community. Yearly tuition for students was half a cord of wood.
