Serving Madera County since 1893, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office protects unincorporated communities through Patrol, Investigations, Special Operations & Professional Standards while leading emergency response and coroner services countywide. Thurman, served from 1893 to 1895. Sheriff Tyson Pogue is the 15th Sheriff to serve Madera County. Sheriff Pogue is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer and

Chief Coroner of Madera County. He is responsible for providing public protection and investigating crimes that occur within the unincorporated areas of Madera County. The Madera County Sheriff’s Department is divided into four distinct and critical levels, all of which operate under the direction of Sheriff Pogue. Those sections are: the Valley Division, Mountain Division, Corrections Division, and Administrative Division which oversees the offices of records, dispatch, civil process and court security.

Mrs. Anguiano has been located and is safe.

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in locating 42-year-old Claudia Anguiano, who has not been seen since June 15, 2026. Claudia was last seen in Whittier, California. Family members report it is highly unusual for her to be out of contact with her children, employer, family, and friends.

If you saw Claudia or Gregory Anguiano, had contact with either of them, or have information that may assist investigators, please contact the Madera County Sheriff’s Office at (559) 675-7770.

Detectives learned Claudia is married to Gregory Simon Anguiano, who was identified as the decedent in a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on June 19 in Madera County.

During the investigation, deputies located Gregory Anguiano’s Ford Escape west of Gaston Road near an orchard and recovered his cellular phone near Avenue 12 and Gaston Road.

Deputies initially responded to reports of a residential burglary in progress and a man carrying a crowbar who was charging at passing vehicles. When a deputy contacted the suspect, he became combative, took the deputy’s TASER, and deployed it against her.
As the struggle continued, multiple callers reported the suspect and deputy fighting on the ground, with the suspect attempting to take the deputy’s firearm. Several courageous community members stopped and came to the deputy’s aid.

Despite those efforts, the suspect continued assaulting the deputy and attempting to gain control of her firearm. The deputy ultimately discharged her service weapon, striking the suspect. Life-saving measures were provided, but the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Under California law, DOJ is required to conduct an independent investigation whenever an officer-involved shooting results in a death and the decedent was not in possession of a deadly weapon at the time of the incident. This is a standard, legally mandated step under Assembly Bill 1506 whenever these criteria are met and is not, by itself, an indication of wrongdoing by the deputy.

During the incident on June 19, 2026, a Madera County Sheriff’s deputy was assaulted, and the suspect took and used the deputy’s department-issued TASER against her and attempted to take her firearm. The facts and circumstances of the incident will be thoroughly reviewed as part of the DOJ’s independent investigation.

Because the investigation is ongoing, no further information is being released at this time.

The Madera County Sheriff's Office is releasing preliminary information regarding a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on June 19, 2026.

At approximately 4:39 p.m., dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call reporting a residential burglary in progress in the area of Avenue 12 and Road 35.

Approximately one minute later, a second call reported a male subject carrying a crowbar and charging at passing vehicles. At the time, it was not known the two incidents were related.

A Sheriff's deputy arrived in the area and contacted the suspect. During the struggle, the suspect took control of the deputy’s department-issued TASER and fired it at her, striking the deputy with the probes.

As the struggle continued, multiple citizens called 9-1-1 reporting the deputy and suspect were fighting on the ground. Several community members intervened to assist the deputy, and callers reported the suspect was attempting to gain control of the deputy's firearm.

Despite the efforts of the deputy and assisting citizens, the suspect continued to resist. At approximately 4:56 p.m., the deputy discharged her service weapon, striking the suspect. Deputies, Cal Fire, and EMS personnel immediately provided life-saving measures; however, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deputy sustained minor injuries and was treated by EMS.

This investigation remains active and is being conducted in accordance with established protocols for deputy-involved shootings. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Sheriff Tyson Pogue thanks the community members who assisted during the incident, stating, "We are grateful for the citizens who acted courageously to assist our deputy during an extremely dangerous and rapidly evolving situation."
