The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is advising motorists to anticipate increased traffic and possible delays as The North Fork Mono Casino prepares to open its doors. The grand opening is expected to attract a significant number of visitors, potentially increasing traffic volumes on nearby highways, ramps, and local roadways. Motorists travelling through the area should plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and remain alert for changing traffic conditions.

If The North Fork Mono Casino is your destination, please refer to the traffic suggestions listed below:

For motorists travelling northbound on State Route 99 (2nd Image):

• Exit Avenue 12 (Exit 151),
• Make a left turn onto westbound Avenue 12,
• Make a right turn onto northbound Road 23,
• Make a right turn onto eastbound Avenue 18/Golden State Boulevard,
• The North Fork Mono Casino will be on your right-hand side.

For motorists travelling southbound on State Route 99 (3rd Image):

• Exit Avenue 18 ½ (Exit 159),
• Proceed straight and continue southbound onto Road 23 (Shell Gas Station),
• Make a left turn onto eastbound Avenue 18/Golden State Boulevard,
• The North Fork Mono Casino will be on your right-hand side.

Additionally, be on the lookout for temporary casino and detour signs for guidance.

The CHP is asking motorists to remain patient, avoid unsafe maneuvers, and to be courteous to other drivers as traffic volume increases. The CHP appreciates the public’s cooperation and encourages everyone to make safety a priority.

🚨 Solo ATV Crash Results in Juvenile’s Death 🚨

On Thursday, October 22, 2026, just after 8 p.m., CHP Madera Officers responded to a crash in an orchard near Avenue 20½ and Road 20.

A preliminary investigation indicates the following:

Around 7 p.m., a 16 year-old-male was riding a 2017 Polaris ATV, southbound on a private dirt road, north of Avenue 20½. The rider crossed over Avenue 20½ (unmaintained) and failed to notice a metal chain strung across the private road, preventing further access, just south of Avenue 20½. The front of the ATV crashed into the chain and as a result the rider was ejected from the ATV. The ATV continued and crashed into an almond tree. Despite life saving measures by CHP and medical personnel, the rider succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to have been a factor in this crash. The rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The California Highway Patrol reminds ATV riders to put safety first:

-Wear a properly fitted DOT-compliant helmet and protective gear.
-Ride in designated areas.
-Ride at a safe speed.
-Stay alert for uneven terrain.

El Niño Weather Advisory!

With El Niño bringing the potential for increased rainfall, be prepared for wet weather and possible flooding. Flooded roads are extremely dangerous - just a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away.

Key reminders:
• Slow down and increase following distance.
• Turn on your headlights when your wipers are in use.
• Turn Around, Don’t Drown - never drive through flooded roadways.

Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain. If you must travel, use caution and check Caltrans QuickMap for road conditions and closures.

On Thursday, October 15, 2026, at approximately 11:36 p.m., the Merced Communications Center (MCC) received reports of a pedestrian lying in the slow lane of southbound State Route 99, south of Cleveland Avenue.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officers responded to the scene and located a female pedestrian who was deceased on the right shoulder.

A preliminary investigation indicates:

The female pedestrian was believed to be in the traffic lanes of State Route 99 southbound, south of Cleveland Avenue when she was struck by an unknown vehicle. The driver of the unknown vehicle then fled the scene without stopping to render aid to the pedestrian and failed to contact emergency personnel.

This crash is still under investigation, and it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this crash.

CHP Madera Area is asking for the public’s help with any information that would assist in this investigation.

⚠️ Innocent Driver’s Life Cut Short in Crash Caused by Suspected DUI Driver ⚠️

On Sunday, October 4, 2026, just after 6:00 p.m., CHP Madera officers responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Road 28 ½ and Avenue 15.

Officers learned the following:

A 32-yeard old man from Madera, CA was driving a 2008 Mercedez-Benz CLS550, northbound on Road 28 ½, approaching the intersection at Avenue 15. At the same time, a 25-year-old man from Madera, CA was driving a 2013 Nissan Altima, westbound on Avenue 15, approaching the intersection at Road 28 ½. At this intersection, traffic on Road 28 ½ is controlled by posted stop signs. Traffic on Avenue 15 is not controlled and has the right-of-way.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz failed to stop for the posted stop sign and entered the intersection directly into the path of the Nissan, at which point a crash occurred. As a result of this impact, the Mercedes-Benz overturned and crashed with a brick wall located on the northwest corner of the intersection. The driver of the Nissan was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. Despite life saving measures, the driver of the Nissan succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A 17- year-old passenger in the Nissan was taken to Valley Children’s Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz suffered minor injuries.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in this crash. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was arrested on scene and was booked at Madera County Jail under various charges.

The California Highway patrol would like to remind the motoring public that driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that affects your ability to drive can put every person on the road at risk. If you’re impaired, don’t drive. Designate a sober driver, call a rideshare, or find another safe way home. Don’t let one impaired decision become a lifetime of regret. Drive sober. Make it home.

Beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, and continuing through 5:59 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, all uniformed CHP personnel will participate in a statewide Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP). During the MEP, officers will increase their presence on California roads and focus on identifying and stopping impaired drivers.

If you see a suspected drunk driver on the road, call 911 and report it. You can save a life.
