18-year-old woman suffers major injuries after solo-vehicle crash.

Earlier this morning (May 30, 2026), CHP Madera officers responded to a solo-vehicle crash on Road 16, south of Avenue 5.

An 18-year-old woman from Madera was driving a 2004 Toyota Corolla northbound on Road 16 when, for reasons still under investigation, she lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, and collided with two pistachio trees.

The driver sustained major injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. The driver was wearing her seatbelt and alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be a factor.

Investigating CHP Officer L. Montoya wants to remind the public to “Always drive attentively, wear your seat belt, and travel at a safe speed for roadway conditions. A split second can change everything”

This Memorial Day, the California Highway Patrol honors the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. We remember their courage, their commitment, and the families who continue to carry their legacy.

Their sacrifice reminds us that safety is a responsibility we all share. As we reflect on their service, we encourage everyone to drive safely, remain vigilant and make responsible choices on the road.

On Friday, May 22, 2026, at approximately 10:31 a.m., CHP Madera officers responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of Avenue 21 and Road 28 ½.

A preliminary investigation indicates:
An 18-year-old man from Madera, CA. was driving a white Ford Escape southbound on Road 28 ½, traversing the intersection of Avenue 21 at an unknown speed. A 59-year-old woman from Madera, CA. was driving a brown Jeep Cherokee westbound on Avenue 21, approaching the intersection of Road 28 ½. As the Ford attempted to cross the intersection of Avenue 21, the front of the Jeep struck the left side of the Ford. This crash caused the Ford to leave the roadway on the south-west corner of the intersection and it struck a pistachio tree.

Despite the immediate response of emergency personnel, the driver of the Ford succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Jeep sustained minor injuries. Both parties were wearing their seatbelt. Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be a factor.

At this location, Avenue 21 is not controlled by stop signs and traffic has the right-of-way. Road 28 ½ is controlled by stop signs in both directions.

Stop signs require a complete stop every time.
✅ Stop fully at every stop sign
✅ Look in all directions before proceeding
✅ Only move when the intersection is clear
✅ Stay alert and avoid distractions

A full stop gives you time to see hazards and prevent crashes. Drive safe and follow the rules of the road.

School Zone Safety Operation 🏫🚌

Yesterday morning, CHP Madera joined forces with the Madera County Sheriff’s Office and the Madera Police Department with one shared goal: School Zone Safety.

Officers and Deputies were deployed to various schools throughout Madera County to help ensure drivers were following the rules of the road and keeping our students safe.

School zones demand extra caution from every driver. Please reduce your speed, avoid distractions, and stay alert for children crossing, bicyclists, and crossing guards at all times. A few extra seconds of attention can make all the difference in keeping our students safe.

A seat belt can be the difference between walking away from a crash and never making it home.

From May 18-31, the California Highway Patrol will participate in the national Click It or Ticket campaign with increased seat belt enforcement. Officers will be stopping drivers and passengers who are not properly buckled up.

Too many lives are lost each year because someone chose not to wear a seat belt. In a crash, being ejected from a vehicle is often deadly, and airbags alone are not enough to protect you.

Buckle up correctly every trip:
✔️Shoulder belt across your chest
✔️Lap belt low across your hips
❌Never behind your back or under your arm
