There are several activities that the City of Madeira and the Recreation and Parks Board sponsors every year. In the winter, Tai Chi, Yoga and Zumba classes are offered to fight off the winter blues. In the spring, here comes Peter Cottontail hopping down the bunny trail. Thousands of colored eggs are hidden for the children to find at the Easter Egg Scramble. In May the city and its residents honor our veterans at the annual Memorial Day March. This event begins at the Madeira Middle School with a solemn walk down Miami Avenue to Dawson Road and ends with a brief ceremony at the newly restored Veteran’s Memorial at McDonald Commons. We kick off the summer with our wiffle ball program, followed by the Independence Day parade and fireworks in July. As well we offer two Concerts in the Park, one in June featuring the Sycamore Community Band and one in July featuring the P&G Big Band. The annual Splash Party is a huge hit with the kids in July and the month of August brings us Shakespeare in the Park. We end the summer season with the annual Street Dance, where residents gather to listen to the band perform, dance, talk, eat and have fun before the start of a new school year. As we come into the holiday season December marks the St. Nick makes his way through the streets of Madeira passing out goodies to all the children. There’s Letters to Santa, Pictures with Santa and, last but not least, the city, in conjunction with the Madeira Chamber of Commerce, sponsors the annual Light up Madeira & Shop Madeira. This annual event is the kick off to the holiday shopping season. It’s a day for shopping and dining at the city’s local businesses, carriage rides, holiday music and ends with the lighting of the Christmas tree at the Millennium Fountain Plaza.
