Last night, Town Manager Dave Daigle, Select Board Vice Chair Renée Deschaines, and I had the opportunity to attend a social event hosted by the Aroostook Partnership in honor of the Canadian Consulate General’s visit to Aroostook County.
Somewhere between the conversations, handshakes, and what I’m pretty sure was diplomacy fueled entirely by Canadian chocolate and good humor, we managed to make some great new friends and strengthen a few cross border connections.
We also learned that Canadians are dangerously polite, incredibly welcoming, and apparently know exactly how to win over a room full of people from northern Maine.
At one point we even left with chocolate labeled “Hey Buddy,” which honestly felt less like candy and more like a formal international peace treaty.
On a more serious note, evenings like this are an important reminder of just how connected the St. John Valley truly is. The relationships between our communities and our New Brunswick neighbors matter, not just culturally, but economically, socially, and for the continued success of the entire region. Maintaining and strengthening those connections will always be important to the future of the Valley.
Huge thanks to the Aroostook Partnership for hosting such a great event and for continuing to foster relationships that benefit communities on both sides of the border.
