The hammer dropped on the 132nd Maine Legislature last night, ending a lawmaking session in which Democrats decided you should pay income taxes on your tips and overtime; the state that demands 85% of what happens in county jails pays only about 17% of the bill, leaving it up to your property taxes; that a person could directly petition a judge to approve a raid your home; that you need to wait an arbitrary 72 hours to buy a gun, even if you already have one or a hundred; that Maine should be a 'Sanctuary State' for illegal aliens; that our public school students being close to last in the country for education outcomes is perfectly okay; that we pay for Portland's wasteful General Assistance funds and unsustainable rents for up to a year; that making you pay a 'solar tax' while ignoring better energy options is good policy; and that Maine taxpayers should be on the hook for untold millions of dollars of MaineCare fraud, among other public policy atrocities.
I waited until the 132nd Maine Legislature adjourned before announcing my candidacy for the 133rd Maine Legislature. Because unlike our governor, secretary of state, and many, many others, I think campaigning from office is a disgusting practice, and I hope you do too.
Representing Maine's House District 6 in the 131st and 132nd Maine Legislature, representing the people of the towns of Blaine, Bridgewater, Castle Hill, Central Aroostook, Chapman, Dyer Brook, E Township, Hammond, Hersey, Littleton, Mapleton, Mars Hill, Merrill, Monticello, Moro, Oxbow North Township, Smyrna, Westfield, and Unorganized Territories has been a genuine privilege.
We can change Maine's trajectory with better, smarter policy respectful of the work you do and the money you earn.
