A prolonged period of dangerous heat is expected to begin Sunday afternoon and continue through at least midweek. Afternoon heat index values are expected to reach 100–110°F, and warm overnight temperatures will provide little relief. An Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for much of northern Missouri, including our area.

Now is the time to prepare:
• Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day (typically noon to 7 PM).
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.
• Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone without adequate air conditioning.

If you need a place to cool off, the following cooling centers are currently listed for Macon County:
• Loch Haven Nursing Home – Macon
• Macon Public Library – Macon
• La Plata Public Library – La Plata

If you are unable to locate a cooling center, call 2-1-1 for assistance.

Macon County Weather Outlook – Sunday, June 21

The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of northern Missouri, including Macon County, under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms on Sunday.

The primary hazards include:
• Damaging wind gusts
• Large hail
• A few tornadoes

Heavy rainfall is also possible, which could result in localized flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Now is a good time to:
• Review your severe weather plan.
• Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
• Charge phones and other essential devices.
• Secure loose outdoor items before storms develop.

The exact timing and location of the strongest storms will become clearer as we get closer to Sunday. Macon County EMA will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.

As of this morning, the Storm Prediction Center continues to monitor portions of the country for severe weather potential over the next 48 hours. We encourage everyone in Macon County to take a few minutes to review the outlooks and have multiple ways to receive warnings should conditions change.

As we head into the next couple of days, we want to encourage everyone in Macon County to stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings and updates.

The National Weather Service is currently highlighting the potential for strong to severe storms across portions of Missouri through Tuesday morning, with the possibility of damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfall, localized flooding, and isolated tornadoes. (National Weather Service)

While forecast models and outlooks help us prepare, weather can still be unpredictable. Storms can develop quickly, shift locations, or become stronger than originally expected. Even areas outside the “highest risk” zones can still experience severe weather impacts.

Now is a good time to:
• Review your severe weather safety plan
• Make sure wireless emergency alerts are enabled on your phone
• Charge devices and keep weather notifications on overnight
• Check on family, neighbors, and those who may need assistance during severe weather
• Avoid relying on outdoor sirens as your only source of warnings

Severe storms will be possible again this evening developing across northern Missouri and moving southeast across the CWA. Damaging winds and large hail will be the main threats. Another round of strong storms will develop on Monday night into Tuesday morning, with large hail, tornadoes, and damaging hail are possible. Storms will also be capable of producing very heavy rain which could lead to localized flooding.

Severe storms will be possible across our area this afternoon through this evening on Good Friday.

There is a chance for storms to develop ahead of a cold front this afternoon. That round is a little more uncertain, but if storms do form, all types of severe weather will be possible, including very large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. The greatest concern for that activity will be in the enhanced risk area.

A second, more likely round of storms is expected along the cold front later this afternoon into tonight. The primary threat with that round will be damaging winds, though a few tornadoes will also be possible.

High temperatures today will climb into the 70s to lower 80s.

Please keep a close eye on the weather today, especially if you have Good Friday plans, travel, or outdoor activities. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings and a plan to move to shelter quickly if needed

Severe storms will be possible this afternoon through this evening. This afternoon there will be the chance for storms out ahead of a cold front. This round of storms is more uncertain however, if they do develop all modes of severe weather will be possible including very large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. The best potential area for that will be in the enhanced threat area (orange). A second and more certain round of storms will be along the cold front itself late this afternoon into tonight. The main threat with this round of storms will be for damaging winds with a few tornadoes also possible. Highs today will be in the 70s to lower 80s.

🚨 Macon County Emergency Management – Road Safety Update 🚨

The National Weather Service in Kansas City reports that road conditions across the area are becoming quite icy. As temperatures continue to fall overnight, travel conditions are expected to worsen through the night and into the morning hours.

❗ If you must travel, please use extreme caution.
• Slow down and allow extra stopping distance
• Watch for black ice, especially on bridges and overpasses
• Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle
• Consider delaying travel if possible

⚠️ Heads Up, Macon County — Severe Weather Possible Tuesday

Macon County Emergency Management is monitoring the potential for severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening (March 10).

The Storm Prediction Center has placed northeast Missouri, including Macon County, in an ENHANCED RISK (Level 3 of 5) for severe storms.

While not everyone will see severe weather, conditions are favorable for storms that could become strong.

Possible Hazards

🌪️ Isolated tornadoes
🌬️ Damaging winds (60+ mph possible)
🧊 Large hail

Timing

⏰ Late afternoon through the evening
Approximately 4 PM – 9 PM

Storms may begin as isolated thunderstorms before potentially forming a line of storms moving through northern Missouri.

An area of low pressure will track through the region on Tuesday creating the potential for scattered thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon. If storms are able to develop, all severe weather modes are possible. Thunderstorms are likely Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as a cold front moves through the area. Some of these storms will be capable of producing large hail and damaging winds.

The Storm Prediction Center is highlighting parts of Missouri for the potential of severe thunderstorms later this week. It’s still early, but this is our first signal that the weather pattern could support stronger storms.

Possible threats could include:

🌪 Isolated tornadoes
🌧 Heavy rain and lightning

Right now this is something to be aware of, not alarmed about, but it’s a good time to start thinking about your severe weather plan and make sure you can receive weather alerts.
