ill a love of reading, and thus help these children to become more academically successful. It is estimated that 61% of households living at or below the poverty rate do not have any suitable reading materials for children in the household. Most recent statistics from Kids Count, released in 2015, noted that 44% of all children in Macon-Bibb County live below the poverty level. This means that, according to these statistics, that over 10,000 children in our community do not have books that they can read and enjoy in their homes. The goal of Book ‘Em is to “arm”, if you will, our children with books so that they can improve their literacy skills and, hopefully, help them to develop a lifelong habit of reading. For many children in Macon/Bibb the only exposure they might have to the world outside of their community is through reading books that enable them to travel all over the world. We see books as stepping stones on the pathway into a world of possibility!

For the tenth year in a row, Book 'Em will provide new books for children of all ages at the Bibb County Sheriff's Office's "Candyland Christmas" event. See the flyer and post below for all of the details.

MEDIA RELEASE: The Bibb County Sheriff's Office will be Hosting “A Candyland Christmas”

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Outreach Section will be hosting “A Candyland Christmas” on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Bibb County Sheriff’s Outreach & Restorative Justice Center, located at 774 Hazel Street. The event starts at 10:00 a.m. and will end at 1:00 p.m. The event is free to children ages 4-14 and who are residents of Bibb County.

Children must be present with their parent or guardian to receive a gift. Toys will be distributed while supplies last. There will be free Sweets and Treats and a free book giveaway by Book’Em.

Book 'Em joined MVP: Macon Violence Prevention, the Bibb School District, Macon+Bibb County, Macon Mental Health Matters, and the Community Foundation of Central Georgia this morning for Donuts with Dads. We had a great turnout! Each child was able to select two new books to take home, and we left more than 200 new books at Bruce Elementary to stock their book vending machine. MVP Coordinator Jeremy Grissom spoke to the dads about taking care of themselves in order to show up as the best possible version of themselves for their children. He encouraged the men to support one another as fellow-dads and to reach out when they need help. We loved everything about this event! 😍📚🍩❤️
