Happy Flag Day! 🇺🇸

The American flag has been flying aboard the Mackinaw since 1944, standing as a symbol of service, sacrifice, and freedom. Long may she wave.

When the American Revolution began in 1775, the colonies fought under a variety of flags. In June of that year, the Second Continental Congress created the Continental Army and adopted the Continental Colors—13 red and white stripes with the British Union Jack in the corner. But as the fight for independence grew, it became clear that a new nation needed its own symbol.

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution declaring that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

More than a century later, in 1885, Wisconsin teacher Bernard Cigrand organized the first formal observance of Flag Day, promoting respect and appreciation for our nation’s flag. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as Flag Day.

Today, we honor the Stars and Stripes and all those who have served beneath them. From wartime service to peacetime missions on the Great Lakes, the flag has remained a constant reminder of the values we hold dear.

Happy Flag Day 🇺🇸⚓️
