Today, our school recognized the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which is also known as Orange Shirt Day.

We wear this color to honor the children who attended Indigenous boarding schools in Canada and the United States, and to remember the communities and families who were affected by them.

The orange shirt represents a story shared by a survivor named Phyllis Webstad. When she was six years old, her grandmother bought her a bright orange shirt for her first day of school. But when she arrived that shirt was taken away, and she felt like her feelings didn't matter.

Today, we wear orange to flip that story upside down. We wear it to declare loudly that Every Child Matters.

Students were lucky enough to listen to authors Phillip and Erin Stead talk about the process of writing and illustrating books. This was made possible with the collaboration of Harbor Springs Festival of Books and donations from the Mackinac Island Community Foundation.

Students also went home with a book published by our authors.
