๐Ÿš’ Garage Fire Response โ€“ June 13, 2026 ๐Ÿš’

On June 13, 2026, North Park Fire was dispatched to the 8700 block of Mariner Drive in Machesney Park for a reported garage fire. First-arriving units were on scene within 4 minutes and reported fire and smoke coming from the garage.

Thanks to the quick actions of responding crews, the fire was brought under control within 20 minutes. Firefighters remained on scene afterward conducting overhaul operations to ensure the fire was completely extinguished. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

North Park Fire would like to thank all responding agencies and change-of-quarter units that assisted during this incident.

โš ๏ธ Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Reminder โš ๏ธ

As shown in the attached video, fires involving lithium-ion batteries can escalate rapidly and become extremely dangerous. To help prevent these incidents:

๐Ÿ”‹ Do not leave batteries charging unattended.
๐Ÿ”‹ Do not charge batteries that show signs of damage.
๐Ÿ”‹ Follow manufacturer charging recommendations.
๐Ÿ”‹ Store batteries in a cool, dry location away from combustible materials.

๐Ÿšจ Important: Never attempt to extinguish a lithium-ion battery fire yourself. While we commend the neighbors who stepped in and tried to help, water can be dangerous when applied to lithium-ion battery fires. As demonstrated in the video, applying water improperly can worsen the situation and place you at serious risk. If a battery begins smoking, overheating, or catches fire, evacuate the area immediately and call 911.

Your safety is our priority. Please take a moment to inspect your batteries and charging practices to help prevent a fire before it starts.

We need to thank another local vendor for their generosity!

In the photo is what's called a "RIT bag," which contains breathing air and equipment to assist in rescuing a trapped or injured firefighter in a burning structure. Without getting too deep into what we do with it, this kit essentially acts as a lifeline if we need to rescue one of our own. Like everything in the fire service, these bags are expensive, but built pretty tough to withstand being drug through all kinds of debris and obstacles.

This bag was recently damaged during a training evolution, and instead of needing to spend money buying a new bag, Blake Awning and Flag Company was able to repair the torn seams and refused to take payment. This isn't the first time the Blake family has taken care of us, but we appreciate it every time. Thanks so much for your generosity! There's definitely a reason they've been in business since 1889.

We'd like to take a second to thank Total Plumbing & Heating, LTD for coming to our aid this afternoon with their sewer drain camera to inspect the plumbing on one of our engines. Due to a failed check valve, a piece of metal debris was either pushed into the rig's water tank (not so horrible) or was in the plumbing going into the intake of the pump's impeller (could have been horrible/catastrophic). Thankfully the piece was NOT in the plumbing going to the pump impeller.

Their generosity saved a great deal time of time and labor to determine where the piece ended up. THANK YOU!
