With "wounded" people and emergency workers busy helping, the front of Co-Line's main office looks like a scene from a movie during the training exercise last Wednesday. A large emergency response presence was in the Sully area on Wednesday, June 3, but thankfully it was only for a large-scale train...

RED FLAG WARNING – 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM Wednesday

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Red Flag Warning for all of central Iowa.
Critical fire weather conditions are expected.

Conditions: • West winds 25 to 35 mph
• Wind gusts 40 to 50 mph
• Humidity between 12% and 22%

That combination means one thing: Any fire that starts will spread rapidly.

Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Again, we do not like putting burn bans in place. We prefer to rely on common sense and personal responsibility. But when people ignore conditions like this, it forces our hand.

If a burn ban becomes necessary, understand it will be because someone could not wait a day or two.

Do not be the person who ruins it for everyone.

Fire departments across the region have already been responding to fires. Do not add to it.

Be smart. Protect your property. Protect your neighbors.

Let’s keep Jasper County safe and .

👋Morning Iowa.

What is a Red Flag Warning? It means do not burn outdoors today.

Any fires that start will grow and spread rapidly due to the dry, cured fuels, strong, gusty winds from the west, and very low relative humidity.

There is NO burn ban currently in effect in Jasper County.

But let’s be honest.

Today is not the day to burn.

Dry ground. Steady wind. Low humidity. That combination does not forgive mistakes. It only takes one spark to turn a small burn pile into something you did not plan for.

We are not dealing with an active fire. We are trying to keep it that way.

If you plan to burn, you must call it in before lighting it.

And if you absolutely choose to burn, be prepared:
• Check the wind and pay attention to direction
• Keep the pile small and manageable
• Have water and tools within reach
• Do not leave it unattended
• Make sure it is completely out before you walk away

Our fire departments would much rather spend their day training and serving the community than responding to preventable grass fires.

A no-burn ban does not mean a green light.

Be smart. Pick a better day.
