On Saturday, June 13th Lynnfield For Love invites our community to share in our 5th Annual Juneteenth Celebration. We will begin by gathering at the Lynnfield Middle School at 10am and embark on our symbolic Opal Lee Walk to the Town Common. Opal Lee is widely known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth” and we honor her unwavering efforts to have Juneteenth, June 19th, recognized as a federal holiday. Immediately following the Opal Lee Walk we will begin our Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony. We partner with the North Shore Juneteenth Association to conduct our event and it is dedicated to celebrating Juneteenth and Black Excellence. Our program will include readings from Poets, music from talented Musicians and meaningful speeches. We will have refreshments and a Juneteenth Book Nook for children and adults.

This year’s event will mark our 5th year of conducting a Juneteenth program in Lynnfield. Lynnfield For Love is proud to fully fund each yearly event.

The Lynnfield Library is partnering with NAGLY (North Shore Alliance of LGBTQ+ Youth), A Healthy Lynnfield and Lynnfield For Love to collect much-needed supplies for local teens. Stop by the library and donate items such as snacks, paper towels, notebooks, books, magazines, and other art supplies.

Donations can be dropped off in the collection bin next to the circulation desk at the library throughout June. Every contribution helps create a welcoming and supportive community for LGBTQ+ youth.

June is Pride Month, and it's also Rainbow Book Month - a nationwide celebration of the authors and writings that reflect the lives of the LGBTQIA+ community.

You can find lists of award-winning LGBTQIA+ books, tools for libraries and library workers from ALA's Rainbow Round Table, and graphics to help celebrate and spread the word on ALA's website: https://bit.ly/4kKOkOg. Is your library hosting a program you're excited for? We'd love to hear about it!

We also know that these stories are under attack. In 2025, ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom found that 39% of books targeted for censorship in U.S. libraries and schools - 1,671 unique titles - represent the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ people and people of color. As these stories continue to be disproportionately targeted for censorship and library workers across the country are facing threats and harassment for serving these communities, Rainbow Book Month has never been more important.

If your library is experiencing challenges to materials and programs serving LGBTQIA+ patrons, ALA has resources to help. You can report censorship to ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom and receive free, confidential support, and the Unite Against Book Bans campaign can help you activate your community to push back against censorship.
