C Troop 1/172 Cavalry

C Troop 1/172 Cavalry Official Page of Cutthroat Troop, 1st Squadron 172nd Cavalry Regiment (Mountain) We train in the mountains of Vermont and the swamps of Louisiana.

We are the Nation’s premier (and only) Mountain Dismounted Reconnaissance Troop. We are the eyes and ears for the Brigade Commander in the most difficult terrain. We move by air, land, and sea to close with and destroy the enemy while remaining completely undetected. Our soldiers are experts in reconnaissance and military mountaineering in any weather Mother Nature throws at as. We are a community

based organization in Lyndonville VT, but our soldiers come from all across New England and even as far away as Florida. We are a close knit family with a high esprit de corps and we are always looking for motivated individuals willing to accept the challenge of being a Cutthroat!”

This past weekend Cutthroat Troop honored SGT Gunnar Watson with a memorial atop the high-angle mountain training area in Camp Ethan Allen Training Site. As a lover of the outdoors, Sniper, and true mountain warrior, we cannot think of a more fitting location to memorialize Gunnar.

Five days ago SGT Gunnar Watson was tragically murdered. Today would have been his 28th birthday. As we continue to grapple with this senseless act, our hearts remain with his family and thankful for all of those helping them prepare for the long road ahead. If you would like to help, consider supporting his family through this meal train that was shared with us:

Let us help the Watson/St Louis family; Aubrie, Arthur & Leo have some meals prepared ahead of time so we can help ease a few things in life. As we all know this has been a big tragedy losing Gunnar, and the next few months will be especially hard over the holidays. Arthur is just a little one and L...

We remain in shock at the devastating loss of our our soldier, SGT Gunnar Watson. Shortly after enlisting, Gunnar distinguished himself by successfully completing Airborne, Ranger, and Sniper School in approximately two years. SGT Watson consistently demonstrated exceptional physical and mental prowess, epitomizing the ideal of the quiet professional, earning admiration and respect of his peers and superiors.

While C Troop was robbed of a dear friend and highly talented member, his family grieves the loss of a beloved father, husband, son, and brother. Our hearts are with them, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to support them in every way possible.

For those wondering how they can help, please reach out and check in on the grieving family and friends. For those able to do so, we also ask that you help support the family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-for-the-watsonstlouis-family-tragedy?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_source=customer

We also ask that those with any information that might assist investigators to call the St. Johnsbury Barracks at 802-773-9101 or submit an anonymous tip online at https://vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit

SGT Watson will forever be in our thoughts and an eternal member of C Troop.

Cutthroat soldiers were recently fielded the new Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDMR), the M110A1. The rifle is manufactured by and features a 1-6x LPVO and Suppressor. From the flat range to the high angle, all who shot the M110A1 were impressed with it and engaged targets out to 600m with ease.

Cutthroat soldiers are closing out our annual training with a rare visit from the sun to do some high angle marksmanship. Snipers occupied their position evading observation from their targets, then provided Scouts and Forward Observers with additional training on Mountain marksmanship before going live. More updates to follow when we get out of the field and finish drying off.

From the Lyndon Outing Club to the top of Burke Mountain, the soldiers of Cutthroat made the most of this weekend’s sub zero temperatures to conduct mountain training, dust off arctic tents and gain confidence in the 7 layer Extended Cold Weather Layering Systems. Thanks to our community hosts as well as all the skiers who stopped to talk, gave a shout out, or a high-speed high five on the slopes.
