Remembering September 11, 2001 🇺🇸

We were honored to stand alongside members of Osage County Fire District #3 and many others at the Melvern exit on I-35, waving flags and remembering the nearly 3,000 lives lost 25 years ago on September 11, 2001.

We will never forget the lives lost, the families left behind, and the courage and sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call that day.

25 years later, we remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Osage County, KS – On September 10th at 9:50 p.m., an Osage County Sheriff’s Office Investigator conducted a traffic stop near 173rd and Shawnee Heights Road for a traffic violation. During the stop, illegal narcotics and a firearm were located.

Marvin J. McWhorter Jr, 66, of Topeka was taken into custody and transported to the Osage County Jail Facility on suspicion of:
• Distribution of methamphetamine
• Criminal possession of a firearm by a felon
• Transporting an open container
• No drug tax stamp

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

CORRECTIONS OFFICER (OSAGE COUNTY, KS) 9/4/2026

The Osage County Sheriff's Office is currently seeking applicants for a Corrections Officer position. Applicants must be prepared to work in a proactive law enforcement agency in busy rural setting. Osage County is located south of Topeka and southwest of Kansas City with two Federal Lakes and one State Lake.

TYPE: Full Time

SALARY: Corrections Officer-$21.63/hr starting, plus benefits
Salary may increase with experience and/or qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A high school diploma or Equivalent (GED), must be at least 18 years of age, pass an extensive background investigation, and psychological exam. A valid Kansas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, must be of good moral character, no felonies, no domestic battery conviction or diversions, or certain misdemeanors. These positions will require shift work, weekends, and holidays.

🏆 2026 Community Traffic Safety Award – Platinum Level 🏆

This morning, Don Hughes, KDOT Law Enforcement Liaison, presented the Osage County Sheriff’s Office with the 2026 Community Traffic Safety Award from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

The Osage County Sheriff’s Office achieved the Platinum Level Award, the highest level of recognition available.

This award recognizes our participation in traffic safety education and enforcement programs throughout the community. Sheriff Wells and Sergeant Knapp accepted the award, with Sergeant Knapp managing our agency’s participation in these programs.

Please join Sheriff Wells in thanking all of the Osage County Sheriff’s Office employees who participated in these programs. Their dedication to traffic safety and enforcement helps make Osage County a safer place for everyone.

Osage County, KS – On August 25th at 3:34 p.m., an Osage County Sheriff’s Office Deputy conducted a traffic stop at K-31 Highway and South Wanamaker Road for a traffic violation. During the stop, a K-9 was deployed and illegal narcotics were located.

Travis W. Hill, 66, of Burlingame was taken into custody and transported to the Osage County Jail Facility on suspicion of the following:
• Distribution of methamphetamine
• Possession of drug paraphernalia
• Possession of ma*****na
• Vehicle liability insurance required
• Operate vehicle without registration

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Osage County, KS – On August 18th at 7:33 a.m., the Osage County Sheriff’s Office responded to two-vehicle collision at US-56 Highway and South Adams Road.

Two adults were transported to a Topeka-area hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. One individual refused medical treatment at the scene.

US-56 Highway experienced intermittent road closures as emergency crews worked the scene and wreckers removed the vehicles involved in the crash. The highway fully re-opened at 12:35 p.m.

The Osage County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Osage County Fire Districts 1 (Carbondale) & 4 (Overbrook), Osage County EMS, Osage County Emergency Management, and Kansas Department of Transportation.

The collision is still under investigation by the Osage County Sheriff’s Office.

Osage County showed up in a BIG way for Night Out! 🎉

We couldn’t have asked for a better evening of fun, food, and time spent together as a community. Despite the heat, we served hundreds of hot dog dinners, along with plenty of popcorn and cotton candy. It was great to see families from across the county enjoying everything the night had to offer.

Something was happening everywhere you looked! From the Wildlife & Parks bow-shooting game and KHP seatbelt enforcer to the bounce house obstacle course, ultimate foam party, bike rodeo, Touch-a-Truck, and impaired driving obstacle course, there was no shortage of things to do.

And, of course, we can’t forget the Battle of the Barrel! 🚒 Congratulations to Fire District #4 – Overbrook for taking home this year’s win!

Events like Osage County Night Out are only possible because so many organizations, businesses, agencies, and volunteers are willing to come together and be part of them. We are incredibly thankful for our community partners who joined us this year:
