Tomorrow: The Lights Out Rally 🐦🌙

Join NYC Bird Alliance at City Hall tomorrow, Thursday 8/13, to support Lights Out efforts and help make NYC safer for migrating birds.

Millions of birds pass through New York City during migration, and nighttime light pollution can disorient them and increase the risk of collisions. Dimming unnecessary lights is a simple way to create a more bird-friendly city.

🪶 Hey Birders!

This season, MRRI scientists deployed the first color identification flags on Semipalmated Sandpipers in the Meadowlands.

These small flags are part of a cross-continental research effort to better understand the movements and survival of this declining species. By tracking individual birds, researchers can learn how long they stay in the Meadowlands during migration, whether they return in future years, and how important this area is as a stopover site on their journey between the Arctic and South America.

If you spot a flagged Semipalmated Sandpiper, please report the three-digit code to Wildlife Biologist Michael Turso at [email protected].

Birds are handled under state and federal permits by trained professionals.

From the exciting Cardboard Kayak Race kickoff at Pier 84 to our Pontoon Boat Tours along the Hackensack River, we got to be part of celebrating our waterways.

Last week, we had a great time taking the Boys & Girls Club of Newark around Richard W. DeKorte Park! 🌿

The group spent the day discovering the Meadowlands through hands-on activities, including learning about the wetlands and meeting MRRI scientists. Our team also shared how we study, monitor, and help protect the Meadowlands through ongoing research and restoration efforts.
