It's time for another great monthly meeting!

As always we'll have plenty of interesting updates from various reporting committees and liaisons.

We will also have a great opportunity to learn more about our city council candidates as their campaigns begin to heat up. This will be an open format discussion driven by your participation so come prepared with questions. You will come out of this meeting better prepared to advocate for them every chance you get.

I would argue that we need to change how we measure success in Lynchburg City Schools. Standardized tests should be the floor of our expectations, not the ceiling.

In a recent conversation with Dr. Roger Jones, one of our city’s most respected educators, he highlighted a critical issue: when we obsess over a single set of tests, we end up sacrificing the very things that educate the whole child. We cannot abandon art, music, theater, field trips, and real career counseling just to “teach to a test”.

We need to set the bar higher. By treating SOLs as the absolute minimum, we can focus on giving every child a comprehensive, world-class education that prepares them for a successful future. Let’s aim for elite.

Well, this is not exactly how I planned to spend the week before our first big canvassing kickoff but here we are.

I spent the morning at OrthoVirginia Urgent Care in Lynchburg dealing with a pretty serious back issue. Apparently, my back did not get the memo that democracy requires walking.

This Saturday, May 30 at 9:30 AM, our Lynchburg Better Together slate — Dave Henderson, Nat Marshall for LYH , and Christina Delzingaro for Lynchburg City Council — is kicking off canvassing downtown. We’ll meet at the First Floor Galleria, 915 Main Street in downtown Lynchburg.

If you’ve been looking for a way to help, this is it. We need volunteers willing to knock doors, talk to neighbors, and help us bring positive, practical leadership to City Council.

I may be moving a little slower than planned, but the campaign is moving forward and we’d be grateful to have you with us.

Join us Saturday at 9:30 AM. Comfortable shoes encouraged. Healthy backs appreciated.

“And now the spirit of the [Humbles] building gets to live on with Brittany’s barber shop on the first floor,” Calfee said. “It’s about bringing those forgotten spaces back to life.”

I appluad the efforts of Daryl Calfee and Penny Lane Properties as they help restore Lynchburg's historic 5th Street corridor. As a resident of Garland Hill, redevelopment along this area is important for the community and for economic vitality, but what's also equally important is that we protect and preserve it's historical nature.

Additionally, I support tackling our affordable housing issues by working with the city to close Lynchburg's "missing middle" housing gap. This approach will not only strengthen our communities but also provide an important economic boost to the city.

New apartment units and commercial spaces are on the market or in the works on the street that was once regarded as the city’s Black Main Street but was later lost to history.

Tonight was a deeply meaningful night for our family.

Thank you to the Lynchburg Bar Association for honoring my mom, Pamela Cheryl Cooke, with the Liberty Bell Award, and for the privilege of accepting it on her behalf.

Mom dedicated her life to standing beside victims, advocating for survivors, and bringing compassion into some of the hardest moments people face. This recognition is a beautiful tribute to her life’s work, and our family is incredibly grateful.
