One of only two homes designed for his personal use, Poplar Forest served as a retreat for Jefferson after his retirement from public service in 1809. Inherited from his father-in-law in 1773, the property was a tobacco plantation housing approximately 94 enslaved men, women, and children throughout Jefferson's life. Today the Corporation for Jefferson's Poplar Forest strives to tell the story of all who lived and worked at Poplar Forest. Open mid-March through December and weekends only mid-January through mid-March.
