The Friends of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation (FLPR) is raising funds to support the on-going care of the animals at The Nature Zone, which recently was forced to close due to budget cuts. We have a GoFundMe page at:

https://gofund.me/59c170fd

or donations can be sent directly to the following address:

FLPR c/o Lynchburg Parks&Recreation, 301 Grove St., Lynchburg, VA 24501 (make checks payable to Friends of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation)

The Nature Zone offered live animal exhibits and hands-on activities, most recently at the Miller Center. They provided both on-site and outreach environmental education programs for children, families, civic organizations, teachers and the general public. The animals, who are housed at The Nature Zone, are still there until a plan can be developed for their future. The animals are being provided daily care, feeding, and veterinary care as needed. This campaign is raising money to help pay for the continued care of the animals. Our initial goal is $2,200 (with an end of campaign goal of $10,000). Thank you for your contribution!

Creekside Trail section re-opened.....see details below.

Creekside Trail section re-opened.....see details below.

On June 30, 2025, the closed section of Creekside Trail will reopen west of the
intersection with Elk Trail all the way to Marsh Farm Trailhead at the end of
Peninsular Street. This segment has been closed since the Flood of 2018 while major repairs to the Ivy Creek Bridge and the trails were undertaken. This half-mile section and Marsh Farm Trail are shown in yellow within the circled area on the accompanying map. The red star indicates the Ivy Creek Bridge.

“The Ivy Creek Bridge Renovation is a keystone to re-opening the eastern portion of Creekside Trail from Peninsular Street to Elk Trail. P&R first explored re-building the Bridge, which was heavily damaged in the Flood of 2018, at a location farther away from the confluence of Ivy Creek and Blackwater Creek, but that was not feasible. The Renovation ultimately saved the City a significant amount of tax dollars, while ensuring the Bridge is safe and able to be enjoyed by trail users for years to come.” - Wyatt Woody, Director of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation

Heritage Park Survey

Heritage Park Survey

It's time to take the FINAL SURVEY for the Heritage Park Conceptual Plan! Heritage Park lies on land that is shared between the City Parks & Recreation Department and City Schools. The northern section of the park lies within the FEMA regulatory floodplain, which somewhat limits the types of activities that should be planned in that location. Currently, there is an open area on the northwest side of the park that includes a general-purpose field, practice field area, parking lot, and a building with storage and bathroom facilities. The remainder of the park is primarily wooded with unimproved hiking trails currently in use along a small drainage stream.
