Today's Guns & Hoses softball game raised money for two great causes and gave us an opportunity to spend time with our friends at the Lynchburg Fire Department.

It also gave us an opportunity to beat them 15-5.

We're grateful for everyone's support and for the friendly rivalry that makes this event so much fun each year. βšΎπŸš”πŸš’

As May comes to a close and we reflect on National Police Week, we pause to honor two of our department's fallen heroes whose anniversaries occurred this month.

Today, we remember Officer Wiley C. Metts (End of Watch: May 19, 1906) and Officer William Halsey Gouldman (End of Watch: May 30, 1883).

Officer Metts succumbed to injuries sustained from a forty foot fall onto railroad tracks near the Rivermont Bridge while courageously chasing a suspect.

Officer Gouldman was the very first line of duty loss in the history of the Lynchburg Police Department, paying the ultimate sacrifice while serving as both an officer and a volunteer firefighter during a devastating fire on Main Street. His loss began our department's solemn tradition of shrouding our badges in mourning.

More than a century later, both of their names are still honored and permanently etched on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. and in our own Honor Garden.

These officers were killed in the line of duty while protecting this community. Their sacrifices are not forgotten. Their legacy lives on in the city they gave everything for.

🚨 CPR Save 🚨

During a recent 911 call, LPD Emergency Communications Supervisor Crystal Grigg played a crucial role in saving a life. Through calm, clear instruction, she guided a caller through CPR until the patient regained a pulse prior to the arrival of EMS.

This marks the fourth time in her career that Grigg has provided successful lifesaving CPR instruction during a call. It is a powerful reminder of the critical role emergency communications professionals serve as the first link in emergency response. They are the first first responders.

Thank you, Supervisor Grigg, for your service and for always answering the call. πŸ’›

Take Away the Opportunity πŸš”πŸ”’

Most vehicle thefts aren't targeted; they are simply crimes of opportunity. A thief is just looking for an easy path, like an unlocked door or items, like guns, left in plain sight.

Help us protect your property:

- Lock your doors

- Take your keys and valuables inside

Stay one step ahead and lock it up.
