CASA of Central Virginia

CASA of Central Virginia CASA’s mission is to train volunteer advocates for children who have been abused and neglected. Its service area includes the entire 24th Judicial District.

The nation's first CASA program was developed in Seattle, Washington in 1977 by David Soukup. As a Judge, David Soukup realized that he needed help in determining what was in the best interest of the children whose cases he had before him in court. He came up with the idea of training volunteers to be advocates for abused and neglected children. Since then over 955 CASA programs have been established throughout the nation. Judge Dale Harris helped to found a CASA program in Central Virginia in the summer of 1989 for the purpose of providing advocacy services to the abused and neglected children in Lynchburg and Amherst County. By 1991-1992 CASA volunteers were also in demand in Bedford County, Campbell County and Nelson County. CASA of Central Virginia was incorporated in January 1994 and received its status as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization in August 1994. The 24th Judicial District is a 2,258 square mile area that includes the cities of Bedford and Lynchburg and the counties of Amherst, Bedford, Campbell and Nelson.

Today was all about looking ahead. 💙

Our Board of Directors and executive staff gathered for our annual board retreat to continue the important work of developing CASA of Central Virginia’s next 3–5 year strategic plan.

Guided by Amanda Stanley and Kate Means from The Artisan Leader, we took what we’ve learned through surveys, focus groups, and conversations with those connected to our work and began turning that feedback into the priorities and direction that will help guide CASA into its next chapter.

We are grateful for a Board that is willing to think thoughtfully, ask good questions, and invest the time needed to plan well for the future of our organization and the children and families we serve.

A special thank you to Reserve Winery & Lounge for allowing us to spend the day in their beautiful space at the Trivium Estate in Forest. It was the perfect setting for a day of conversation, reflection, and planning.

There is still work ahead, but we are excited about where this process is taking us and what the next several years may hold for CASA of Central Virginia.

An incredible example of generosity in action! 💙

Last week, Terry and Janet hosted an amazing fundraiser for CASA of Central Virginia at Burnbrae Vineyards. They creatively combined items they won through our April Auction, including a live saxophone performance by the talented Trev Hicks. Thanks to their generosity and the support of their friends and neighbors who attended, they have raised more than $7,000 so far!

We are deeply grateful to Burnbrae Vineyards for hosting, to Trev Hicks for providing such beautiful music, and to Terry, Janet, and all their guests for showing up for children who have experienced abuse or neglect in this powerful way. We are truly overcome with gratitude.
