Twenty-five years later, we remember.

This morning, our community gathered at Monument Terrace alongside the Lynchburg Police Department and Lynchburg Fire Department to honor the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, and those whose lives were forever changed by that day.

Through the posting of colors, the laying of a wreath, remarks, music, a moment of silence and Taps, we reflected not only on profound loss, but also on the courage, service and unity that emerged in its wake.

As Police Chief Kennith Edwards reminded us, first responders ran toward “danger, chaos, and the unknown.” Fire Chief Brad Creasy reflected on the responsibility carried forward by a new generation of first responders: to ensure that “Never Forget” remains more than a phrase, but a promise renewed through service.

A quarter century has passed, but that promise remains.

We remember the lives lost. We honor those who answered the call. And we carry forward the courage, compassion and commitment to one another that September 11 continues to ask of us.

We will never forget.

- 1300 and 1400 blocks of 4th Street
