An estimated 5 million, or 1 in 10, older Americans experience elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Working together across our networks, we can generate awareness and foster action to end elder abuse. Let’s work to keep everyone safe as we age. Monday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Symptoms of measles typically include fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a rash that usually begins on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. It spreads easily through the air, and a person with the disease can be contagious up to four days before the rash, spreading it before they know they are sick.

Please use caution if you haven't had an MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccination and are planning to visit with anyone living or working in Buckingham County.

Measles outbreaks are occurring in parts of the United States and in other countries.

Virginia has one active measles outbreak in Buckingham County. VDH is working to identify additional cases, connect people to testing and care, and is offering vaccine to those who need it.

✅VDH encourages people who are not vaccinated to avoid large gatherings or crowded events.
✅VDH encourages everyone to talk to a healthcare provider about the measles vaccine recommendations for their family.
✅ People who live in Buckingham County may have a different recommendation for vaccines because of the outbreak.
✅ People who are traveling this summer should make sure they have had two doses of the MMR vaccine for full protection.

Happy 6/5! Most people become eligible for Medicare at 65 so we celebrate Medicare Fraud Prevention Week the week of 6/5 to help remember the steps to prevent, detect, and report Medicare fraud!

06/04/2026

Learning how to prevent, detect, and report Medicare fraud and then sharing what you learn with others is how Medicare beneficiaries, caregivers, family members, partners, health care professionals, and the whole community can participate in this week.

Report: If you find something concerning on an MSN or accidentally gave out your Medicare information, report it! Don't hide it and don't be ashamed. Scammers are really good at what they do and the SMP is here to help. Steps to report Medicare fraud:
- Fill out an online form ( https://smpresource.org/you-can-help/report-fraud/ ) to be connected to your local SMP... or call CVACL. We're your local SMP.
- Call 1-877-808-2468 to be connected to your local SMP... or call CVACL at 434-385-9070. We're your local SMP.
- Use the SMP Medicare Tracker app's "report fraud" button, which works just like the online form.

Detect: For situations you can't prevent, learning how to detect potential fraud, errors, and abuse is very important. Steps to detect Medicare fraud:
- Learn How to Read Your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) to spot red flags.
- Create a Medicare.gov account to review claims quicker. MSNs are mailed every 180 days or at least twice a year.
- Request and use a My Health Care Tracker from the SMP and track what happens at appointments to then compare with what is billed on the MSNs and/or Explanation of Benefits (EOBs).

- Don't answer unknown calls. Wait for a message and call the person back.
- Stay up to date on the latest scams from the SMP through social media, the national fraud schemes pages, or local events.
- Download the SMP mobile app, SMP Medicare Tracker.
