Some scenes from our annual Retirees' Social today ... it was a great opportunity for old friends to reconnect and to celebrate the six who joined the ranks of retired firefighters over the past year, all while surrounded by historical artifacts from the department's past.

If you passed by the old Toyota place on Wards Road earlier today and saw fire trucks showering the building with water, there's no cause for alarm. The LFD had nine firefighters in a DAO (Driver Aerial Operator) class, learning how to set up and balance the truck, flow water and operate the ladder for high rise fire attacks. The 40-hour class includes classroom work as well as hands-on experience with the apparatus ... they'll all need more actual on the job experience before being added to a truck crew. Thanks to Blairs Fire & Rescue for bringing a second ladder truck to help out today!

Man, there's just no feeling like the one you get during those last couple days of school. Books are put away, papers have been stuffed into backpacks, and you're searching through the lost and found for your winter coat that disappeared five months ago. And instead of sitting in class, you're outside for Field Day, and in the case of Linkhorne Elementary School, you're getting a chance to visit with some firefighters, hear about their job and feel what it's like to sit in the cab of a fire engine or ladder truck. We had a great time visiting with these Linkhorne Lions today and want to thank them for all the great questions and for being so attentive. Have a great, safe summer!

Did you know that in addition to our Fire Marshal's office, we also have on-shift firefighters who can investigate the origin and cause of a fire? It requires some specialized training, and recently four of our members completed their 1033 class in Roanoke to be certified in fire investigation. Capt. Zach Foster, MFF Jalani Brooks, MFF Adam Wagner and MFF Brian Summers were presented with the FMO challenge coin from Fire Marshal Candace Brown in recognition of their hard work. Thank you for finding another way to serve the citizens and the department!

Firefighters made quick work of a kitchen fire on Hilltop Drive this morning. The call originally came in as a fire alarm generated by the home's security system, but when crews arrived they could smell smoke and see flames inside the kitchen. After making entry, they were able to douse the fire with just a fire can, while also helping to remove three cats and a dog from the smoke-filled residence. The fire was contained to the kitchen area.
