As we kick off this school year, it's crucial to emphasize the importance of safety, particularly in and around our school zones. The safety of our students, staff, and all members of our school community is our top priority. To ensure everyone's well-being, we kindly request your cooperation in adhering to the following safety guidelines:

Allow Extra Time: We understand that mornings can be rushed, but we urge all parents, guardians, and commuters to allow extra time when traveling during school hours. Rushing can lead to unsafe driving behaviors.

Reduce Speed in School Zones: Please remember to slow down when approaching school zones. Adhering to the posted speed limits is essential for the safety of our children, who are often walking or biking to school.

Park Legally: When dropping off or picking up your child, it is crucial to park legally and in designated areas. Illegally parked vehicles can create hazards for students and other commuters.

Follow Traffic Rules: Respect all traffic rules and signs around our schools. This includes obeying stop signs, crosswalks, and traffic signals.

We want to emphasize that our children depend on all of us to arrive safely at school every day. SCHOOLS ARE REOPENING THIS WEEK- SLOW DOWN

Our schools are reopening and with that brings more traffic both vehicular and pedestrian. School buses will be picking up students, kids riding their bikes and some will walk to school. It’s never more important for drivers to slow down and pay attention than when kids are present - especially before and after school.

The Lynbrook Police Department will be assigning extra patrols to schools when we expect high vehicle and pedestrian traffic times.

School’s Back in Session – Safety First!

As our community schools reopen, we want to remind everyone, especially our young pedestrians and bicyclists, to stay alert and safe when traveling to and from school.

Pedestrians
• Cross at marked crosswalks and never against a red light.
• Always look before crossing and follow the direction of school crossing guards.
• Use sidewalks or designated paths—never walk along the roadway.

Bicyclists
• Helmets are required for riders ages 14 and younger, but strongly recommended for all.
• Ride on the right side with the flow of traffic.
• Always secure your bicycle with a lock when it’s not in use.

Let’s work together to make sure all students arrive at school and back home safely!

Last night, the Lynbrook Police Department was proud to join the community at National Night Out hosted by St. Boniface Church in Elmont.

National Night Out is a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the partnership between law enforcement and the communities we serve. It was a great evening filled with conversations, family activities, and the chance to connect with residents in a fun and welcoming atmosphere.

This holiday weekend, the Lynbrook Police Department will be out in full force enforcing DWI and impaired driving laws to help keep our roads safe.

If you're celebrating, plan ahead:
Designate a sober driver.
Use a rideshare or taxi.
Stay where you are if you've been drinking.
Take the keys from anyone who is impaired.

One poor decision can have lifelong consequences. Protect yourself, your passengers, and everyone else on the road.

As we celebrate Independence Day, the Lynbrook Police Department wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July weekend.

We also want to remind residents that officers will be actively responding to and enforcing fireworks complaints throughout the holiday weekend. While fireworks are a cherished part of the celebration, leave the displays to the professionals.

The possession or use of illegal fireworks in the Village of Lynbrook may result in summonses, substantial fines, and/or criminal charges, depending on the circumstances.

Let's work together to keep our neighborhoods safe, protect our veterans, pets, and neighbors, and ensure everyone has a happy and safe Independence Day.

EXTREME HEAT ALERT

With temperatures expected to exceed 100 degrees, the following locations will be open as Cooling Centers for residents seeking relief from the heat:

Lynbrook Public Library

Lynbrook Recreation Center

Thursday, July 2, 2026 – Saturday, July 4, 2026

Heat Safety Tips:

Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol or excessive caffeine.
Stay indoors in air-conditioned locations whenever possible.
Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
Limit outdoor activities, especially during the hottest part of the day.
Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.
Take frequent breaks if working outdoors.

Check on Your Neighbors

On June 30, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Lynbrook Police Officers responded to the vicinity of Merrick Road and Taft Avenue for a report that four ducklings had fallen into a storm drain.

Upon arrival, Police Officer Geldmacher located the trapped ducklings nearly 15 feet below the roadway inside the storm drain. With the assistance of the Lynbrook Fire Department, Officer Geldmacher safely entered the storm drain and successfully rescued all four ducklings.

After their rescue, the ducklings were reunited with their very patient mother, who had remained nearby throughout the ordeal.

A great example of teamwork between the Lynbrook Police Department and the Lynbrook Fire Department, resulting in a happy ending for one very grateful duck family!
