From Emergency Management:

Boone County will not be participating in the NWS Tornado Drill tomorrow (3/27) at 10:00 AM. There are a couple of reasons for this. The first being that the weather has been all over the board the last several days. The second reason being this drill today compared to what it was a few years ago is now really just an activation of the outdoor warning sirens and nothing else. We also already conduct a drill of our outdoor warning sirens the First Monday of every Month.

You've got mail!

A new Iowa law requires each county mail all property owners a budget year statement. The statement includes proposed property tax rates for the upcoming fiscal year for the owner’s school district, county, and city. This is not any kind of new tax, just an explanation of how the property taxes that you already pay are calculated.

The Iowa Department of Management (DOM) has additional property tax information and a tool to calculate the taxes for your property on its website at: https://dom.iowa.gov/message/article/property-taxes-tax-replacement/school-county-and-city-budget-year-statement

Below you will see the details for the Public Hearing for the proposed levy for the City of Luther's FY 25 budget. As you can see, the levy rate has decreased from $9.48/1000 to $8.65/1000. This is due to an increase in the value of the property that the city can collect taxes from both from changes made by the county assessor to individual property values and the financing program that the city used to pay for the storm water improvements coming to an end.

It's election day! Come cast your vote at city hall until 8:00pm.

You will see the city has a special measure on the ballot requesting to change the allowed uses of the money that the city receives from Local Option Sales Tax. Currently it is restricted to capital projects. The City Council needs your "YES" vote to remove the restriction so that it can be used by the city as needed which allows the council more flexibility in the budgeting process. This is especially important when the city is impacted by natural disasters, like the derecho of 2020. This flexibility will help the council keep tax rates steady. It does not prohibit these funds from being used for capital projects, it broadens their possible uses so that each year the budget can be more efficient. This is NOT a new tax, simply a reassignment of a current tax to better fit the needs of the city.
