Friends of the Island Library (FOIL)

Friends of the Island Library (FOIL) Lummi Island Community Library Activities, including the FOIL Board meeting on the 2nd Mon each month open to public.

FOIL functions as a support base of volunteers, including a governing board, to raise funds through a variety of activities and events. The funds go exclusively toward maintenance of the Island Library and grounds that are community-owned. FOIL also plans functions that enhance the Island Library brand through educational presentations and experiences.

Kudos to our Lummi Island Community. FOIL’s Greetings, Gathering, and Giving Silent Auction was a whopping success. The auction netted close to $10,000. FOIL wholeheartedly thanks all who participated- donors, workers, and attendees.

Upcoming Programs/Events

Farewell to Overdue Fines - That’s right! As of Jan. 2, 2020, Whatcom County Library System (WCLS) said farewell to overdue fines and cleared them from all accounts. WCLS will no longer charge borrowers for returning library materials after the due date. Also existing overdue account balances are eliminated so everyone starts fresh. Borrowers are still charged replacement costs for unreturned or damaged items. We do want library materials back! . Eliminating overdue fines ensures greater access to library materials and services – after all, that’s what libraries are all about!

Island Story Time – A 30 minute open program that includes stories, rhymes, and songs. For ages 2-6. Meets the first Saturday of the month. Sat., Feb. 1st , 10:30-11:00 AM.

Let’s Make Valentines - Make one-of-a-kind valentines for family and friends. All materials provided. For grades K-5. Tues, Feb 11th, 2:30 – 3:30 PM.

Island Library Book Club - meets the first Monday of the month from 7:00 – 8:00 PM at the library. In February we will discuss “Lands of Lost Borders” by Kate Harris. March’s book will be “Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste Ng. Open to all.

McCarthy, Alaska: Treasure and Tragedy with Nancy Simmerman,a professional photographer covering the entire state of Alaska from 1959 to 1989.Nancy will share “her McCarthy” via an old-fashioned slide show. You’ll get a bit of history and what it’s like to live in McCarthy (permanent population: only 28 in 2010.) Sat., Feb. 8th, 7:30 – 8:30 PM.

Fall Cleanup - Enjoy a few hours with your friends, in the autumn air, preparing our beautiful library grounds for winter! It’s time to rake leaves, do some light pruning and weeding, and put in new plants. October 20th 12:00-3:00, bring gloves and tools.

Greetings, Goodwill, & Giving – Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate the season, greet you friends, and pick up some wonderful gifts at the annual Friends of Island Library's holiday season silent auction. This gala event will be on Dec. 8th from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the Grange Hall. There will be refreshments and entertainment. All items are donated by Island friends and artists.

Island Library Book Group – is a book group for adults. Engage in stimulating conversation about books, exchange perspectives about characters and plot, and get to know your neighbors. November’s book is “To the Bright Edge of the World” by Eowyn Ivey. Check with the library staff for a copy of this book. This group is open to all adults. Monday, November 4th, 7:00 – 8:30 PM.

Island Story Time – A 30 minute open program that includes stories, rhymes, and songs. For ages 2-6. Meets the first Saturday of the month. Sat., Nov. 2nd , 10:30-11:00 AM.

Mask Making - Calling all masters of disguise in grades K-5. Come to the library, hear Lily's Cat Mask, and make a mask of your own. Tues., Oct. 22nd, 2:30 – 3:30 PM

WCLS’s 75th Anniversary Celebration - On November 7, 1944, the citizens of Whatcom County said yes to the power of stories by voting to form what is today the Whatcom County Library System. In celebration of this 75th anniversary, all county libraries will host special activities. Celebrate the past and join us for the next chapter.Celebrate WCLS's 75th Birthday with a party at the Island Library! Special activities, cake, and beverages all day. Thursday, Nov 7th, 2:00-8:00PM.

Pajama Story Time - An evening story time that combines bedtime stories, songs, and activities. Wear your PJs and bring your stuffies. Ages 2–8,Tues, Nov 12th, 6:30 -7:00 PM.

Let It Not Happen Again: Lessons of the Japanese American Exclusion - Clarence Moriwaki shares the story of Bainbridge Island—the origin point of the Japanese American exclusion—to provide a human, historical account of this national tragedy, and to ask the question: Are there parallels to what’s happening in America now? Moriwaki uses historical images, including historical and current propaganda, to explore the fear, racism, and failure of political leadership that led to these unconstitutional actions during World War II, and why we must not let it happen again. FOIL’s Used Book Sale will be open daily from 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM during July. The book sale will be open until Labor Day weekend. We continue to accept books for the sale. Put them by the barn’s double doors.

Mongolia – Stories From the Peace Corp - Brooke Pederson, new Manager of the Island Library, will share stories and pictures of her experience living and working in Mongolia with the Peace Corps in 2005-2007. Sat. Aug. 31st, 7:00 – 8:00 PM.

Modern Slavery – Understanding Human Trafficking in the 21st Century - In this illuminating talk, Robert Beiser, the executive director of Seattle Against Slavery, examines how human trafficking affects individuals across gender, race, and class lines. Participants will learn the history of commercial exploitation in the United States, its modern-day effects, and how we can keep Washington communities safe from this hidden, dangerous crime. This presentation is part of Humanities Washington's Speakers Bureau program. Sat., Sept. 21st, 7:30 – 8:30 PM.

Brooke Pederson will be the new Island Library manager. Brooke has a MLIS degree and is currently the Director of the Concrete Library. She will be in the library starting May 4th.

NASA: Colonizing Space - Whether you want to be an astronaut or you're just interested in the future of space exploration, this program is for you. Someday, we may colonize Mars. Tell our Arduino device what you want to be when you grow up, and find out if Mars needs you! Also, make your own record of what you would send into space to represent humanity. Make Aluminum Can Plant Markers - Creating beautiful permanent tags and markers for your seedlings, starts, and plant species will make your garden identification so easy and fun. Karen Weber will share her knowledge and materials so we can all add a whimsical, decorative, and useful element to our spring plantings. An Evening with Steve Mayo - Pacific Northwest marine artist Steve Mayo has had a lifetime interest in maritime art and history. As a youth, he learned to sail on the Columbia River where he became fascinated with fishing boats, tugs, and ocean-going shipping. Today Mayo and his wife live in Belllingham, WA where he continues to paint from his studio overlooking the waterfront of Bellingham Bay. His paintings reside in many private and corporate collections internationally and have been featured as covers and illustrations in a number of books on Northwest regional and British Columbia history. The Bald Eagle- A Local Treasure - A representative of the North Cascades Audubon Society will speak about the lives of eagles, how to observe these majestic birds without disturbing them and eagle-watching field trips this winter.
