City of Lumberton Fire Department Lumberton Fire Department is dedicated to saving lives, making bad days better and saving property. The battalions work a 24/48-shift rotation.

In 1903 Stephen McIntyre formed the first organized fire company after taking oath as the special constable of the Chief of the fire department and a policeman of Lumberton thus marking the beginning of the City of Lumberton Fire Department. The Lumberton Fire Department's Central Station is located at 600 North Cedar Street adjacent to City Hall. Fire Department Divisions include Fire Administration and Fire Suppression. There are two other district fire stations located throughout the city:
1. The Dunn Road Fire Station serves the residents of Southwest Lumberton
2. The Bailey Road Fire Station serves the residents of North Lumberton

The Fire Suppression Division is responsible for firefighting, the delivery of fire prevention and public fire education programs, rescue services, emergency medical response at the Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate level, hazardous materials response at the operations level, building/grounds and hydrant maintenance. There are 3 battalions with 16 personnel assigned to each battalion. Each battalion is comprised of a Battalion Chief, 3 Captains, 1 Lieutenant and 11 firefighters. Each Battalion Chief is responsible for the daily operation of their shift. Captains are responsible for the daily activities of each fire station, as assigned by the Battalion Chief.

In continuing our preparedness series let’s talk about what we have done and are continuing to do.

Tomorrow is the 8th anniversary of Hurricane Florence’s major impact on the City of Lumberton and Southeast NC. The events that occurred after the flooding began help solidify the initial planning for improving services for the citizens and visitors of our great city.

After Hurricane Matthew, there was a realization of increasing our response capabilities for the City of Lumberton. A multi pronged approach that included training, working in a partnership with Lumberton Rescue and EMS Inc. and ultimately securing funding that provided the ability to purchase the much needed rescue equipment for our agency.

Since 2017 (the year after Hurricane Matthew) we have continued training and allowing personnel the opportunity to take Technical Rescuer Swiftwater Technician. We are proud to say we have 16 members that have that certification with 5 additional personnel taking class in October. Every year we complete the required NFPA competency skills involving swimming and swift water rescue skills refresher at Fayetteville Technical Community College swift water facility. This past Thursday our personnel completed their annual swim test. We are planning our yearly swift water skills day in the next month.

Later this morning members of Battalion 1, Engine 3; FF Tanna Cummings, FF John Jackson, Captain Jarrod Hendren, and Captain Eric Cannizzaro joined law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, and members of our community for a 9/11 Memorial at the Robeson CRV.

Twenty-five years have passed since September 11, 2001 but the sacrifice, courage, and lives lost that day will never be forgotten.

May we always remember their courage. May we always honor their sacrifice.

Today, the Lumberton Fire Department came together to walk 3.5 miles in remembrance of September 11, 2001.

25 years later, we still remember.

We remember the 343 firefighters who answered the call and never returned home. We remember the first responders who ran toward danger while others were running away. We remember every innocent life lost, every family forever changed, and the courage and sacrifice shown on one of our nation’s darkest days.

For us, today’s walk was more than miles traveled. It was about honor. Sacrifice. Brotherhood. Remembrance.

We walked for those who can no longer walk beside us.
We walked so their names, their courage, and their sacrifice are never forgotten.

May we always remember how our nation came together that day, and may we continue to honor those who gave everything in service to others.
