The combination of extremely dry fuels and gusty southwest winds will lead to increased fire danger today. Dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly due to the breezy conditions.

What Kind of Firefighter Are You?
Are you an aggressive firefighter or a "hit it hard from the yard" firefighter?
Are you proactive, preparing for the next incident before the tones drop, or reactive, trying to figure it out after you arrive?
Are you the firefighter who is constantly training, learning, and sharpening your skills, or the one who says, "I already took that class"?
The fire doesn't care how many certificates are hanging on your wall. The victim trapped inside doesn't care how long you've been on the department. What matters is whether you are prepared today.
Aggressive doesn't mean reckless. It means being trained, disciplined, and ready to take action when lives are on the line. Being proactive means knowing your response area, pre-planning target hazards, mastering your equipment, and training until the skills become muscle memory.
The firefighter who thinks they know it all has stopped growing. The firefighter who continues to train, regardless of rank or years of service, understands that the day they stop learning is the day they become a liability.
So ask yourself:
Are you preparing for the next fire or just hoping it doesn't happen?
Are you training for success or making excuses?
Are you part of the solution or part of the problem?
The fire service needs firefighters who are willing to train, adapt, and perform when it matters most. Which one are you? 🚒🔥

Weakness gets people killed.
So why would you choose not to train?
Every fire, every rescue, and every emergency call presents challenges that demand skill, knowledge, and confidence. When conditions deteriorate and lives are on the line, there is no substitute for training.
Training builds strength. Training builds confidence. Training builds muscle memory. Most importantly, training prepares you to protect your fellow firefighters and the citizens who depend on you.
If you are relying on outdated training, or trying to learn the fire service solely from YouTube or TikTok videos, you are headed for disaster. While there may be useful information available online, nothing replaces quality hands-on training, proven tactics, experienced instructors, and continuous education.
The fire service is constantly evolving. Buildings change. Fire behavior changes. Equipment changes. Tactics change. If your training is not keeping up, you are falling behind.
The firefighter who refuses to train is not just limiting themselves—they are becoming a liability to everyone around them.
Train hard. Train often. Train until it becomes muscle memory.
Because on the fireground, weakness can cost lives.

Saving Our History While Embracing the Future
The fire service is built on tradition. It is built on the sacrifices, courage, and dedication of those who came before us. The stories, values, and lessons passed down through generations are what make our fire departments more than just organizations—they make us a family.
As we move forward, it is important that we preserve our history and never forget our roots. The old photographs, the stories from retired firefighters, the traditions, and the lessons learned through years of service deserve to be remembered and shared with future generations.
At the same time, we must be willing to embrace change. New technology, modern equipment, thermal imaging cameras, improved communications, data-driven decision making, and advanced training methods are helping firefighters work safer, smarter, and more effectively than ever before.
The goal is not to choose between tradition and progress. The goal is to honor our past while preparing for the future.
The firefighters who built this profession gave us a strong foundation. It is now our responsibility to preserve that legacy while continuing to learn, adapt, and improve for the communities we serve.
Never forget where we came from. Never stop preparing for where we're going.

WHY WOULD YOU JOIN YOUR LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT? 🚒

Have you ever thought about serving your community as a volunteer firefighter?

Maybe it's the opportunity to help someone on their worst day. Maybe it's the desire to give back to the community that has given so much to you. Or maybe it's the chance to be part of something bigger than yourself.

When you join a fire department, you become part of a team dedicated to protecting lives, property, and the people who call your community home. You gain valuable training, lifelong friendships, leadership skills, and the satisfaction of knowing you made a difference.

No experience? That's okay. Most firefighters started with little or no experience. What matters most is a willingness to learn, serve, and answer the call when your neighbors need you.

The fire service isn't for everyone, but it may be for you.

So let me ask:

East Howellsville Fire Department Hero of the Day
June 12, 2026
Today, the East Howellsville Fire Department received a call to assist a citizen whose pet cat was trapped in a tree. Assistant Chief Jerry Oxendine responded to the scene and successfully rescued the cat.
Upon bringing the animal safely to the ground, it was apparent that the cat was experiencing heat exhaustion from being exposed to the hot weather conditions. Thanks to Chief Oxendine's quick actions and concern for the well-being of the animal, the cat was safely reunited with its owner.
While not every call involves a fire or a major emergency, every call is important to the person requesting help. Today's response is a great example of the dedication and compassion our firefighters show to the community they serve.
Thank you, Assistant Chief Jerry Oxendine, for going above and beyond in service to our community. Your actions today made a difference for both a concerned pet owner and a very grateful cat.
