****PARK ALERT****

Due to ongoing rain and the possibility of flooding, primitive campsites will be closed until further notice. While the creek is not currently at flood stage, we are making these closures out of an abundance of caution. Electric campsites currently remain open. We are monitoring the weather and the creek level and will update openings and closures as necessary. If you have plans to visit the park, please check the conditions before going.

Anyone who has spent time in southeast Texas has likely heard the repetitive tapping sound of woodpeckers drilling at trees. The appropriately named woodpeckers use their strong bills to chip away at old or dead trees and get at the insects inside. Their long, sticky tongues allow them to excavate more deeply. Many woodpeckers will even drill their own nesting cavities in these trees, which can later become homes and nesting sites for other animals.

The red-headed woodpecker, the red-bellied woodpecker, and the pileated woodpecker are just three of the seven woodpecker species you may encounter at Village Creek State Park. The dense vegetation that covers most of the park can make birds hard to see, but many birds can still be heard. The Longleaf Loop trail is not covered by so many trees and is one of the best places in the park to see birds.

Have you been seeing small holes around Village Creek State Park? They may have been left by nine-banded armadillos! These armadillos are prolific diggers, using their large claws to create burrows and search for insects, their preferred food. Because they rely on digging for shelter and food, they can only be found in areas where the soil is soft enough to dig. Unused armadillo burrows provide homes for many other wildlife species, including snakes, possums, skunks, and burrowing owls.
