Transporting PPE Ensembles - A Message from the TFCA Safety Committee
After the recent Safety Committee Meeting, the members want to reminder chiefs of the importance of protection of firefighters while transporting PPE ensembles when traveling from station to station. Station reassignments is a common practice in the fire service, which requires firefighters to carry their PPE in their personal vehicle when moving to a different station. Recent research has shown that firefighter gear maintain particulates that could be hazardous.
The Committee recommends fire chiefs take action to assist in protecting our workforce. First, provide containers for firefighters to transport their gear when moving stations. Chief Rocha was able to provide gear bags to his staff through a cooperative effort with the City of Corpus Christi's Risk Management Department. Other suggestions are to provide Rubbermaid boxes or 55 gallon heavy duty trash bags. One of these options fits into every department's budget. Second, require that PPE is carried in a container when transporting via personal vehicles. Also, prohibit the practice of carrying PPE inside of the passenger compartment of personal vehicles, when possible. Finally, ensure that all gear is cleaned and dry before long-term storage in a container.
While exposure to carcinogens continues to be a risk to the fire service, there are simple steps we as chiefs can do to minimize the risks. Don't delay, provide containers for your firefighters to carry their PPE ensembles along with issuing procedures for the transport of the ensembles in personal vehicles.
