Yesterday, the Caldwell County Constable’s Office, Precinct 3, and Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3, had the opportunity to participate in the LEAP Regional Career Expo at the Caldwell County Evacuation Center in Luling.
More than 600 middle and high school students attended the Expo to explore careers and learn more about the opportunities available to them after graduation.
For our two offices, the day was about more than setting up a table and handing out brochures. Students had an opportunity to speak directly with Deputies and Justice Court staff about the roles of Constables, Deputies, and Justices of the Peace; how our offices work together within the Texas justice system; and the responsibilities carried out by Texas Peace Officers, including Law Enforcement, civil process, warrants, Traffic Enforcement, investigations, and Environmental Enforcement.
With many of these students already driving or quickly approaching driving age, traffic safety was also an important part of the conversation. Through our TxDOT Selective Traffic Enforcement Program, students received information on speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, motorcycle safety, and making responsible decisions behind the wheel.
Right next door, the Lockhart High School Law & Public Service Club had its own booth and interactive impaired-driving activity. Club members conducted a heel-to-toe exercise using impairment-simulation glasses to demonstrate how impairment can affect balance and coordination. Our Deputies and Justice of the Peace volunteered to participate in the students’ activity and put their own balance to the test.
Throughout the day, students asked questions, picked up educational materials, learned about different careers in public service, and were even encouraged to pick up the Judge’s gavel and give it a try.
Some of these students are just beginning to think about what they want to do after high school; others are only a short time away from making those decisions. Whether their future includes Law Enforcement, the courts, college, the military, a trade, or another profession entirely, the choices they make today can have an impact on the opportunities available to them tomorrow.
Events like the LEAP Regional Career Expo provide an opportunity to do more than explain what we do. They allow us to spend time with young people, answer their questions, and perhaps introduce them to a career or path they had never considered before.
The Caldwell County Constable’s Office, Precinct 3, and Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3, were proud to be part of this year’s event and grateful for the opportunity to spend the day with students from across the region.
