06/14/2026
Today commemorates the date in 1777 when the United States approved the design for its first national flag. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as the official date for Flag Day. In 1949, the U.S. Congress permanently established the date as National Flag Day.
The U.S. Flag Code states that a worn American flag should be destroyed "in a dignified way, preferably by burning" (4 U.S.C. §8(k)).
"Retiring a flag is not simply discarding cloth. It is the final act of respect for everything that cloth has stood for."
Join us today as we properly retire the flags of our community.
🇺🇸 Tomorrow, we gather to honor the flag, our history, and those who have served our nation.
Join us for the Flag Day Ceremony as part of the America 250 Celebration at VFW Post #1836.
The evening will include a formal Flag Day Ceremony, an opportunity to learn more about the traditions surrounding our nation’s flag, and a respectful Flag Retirement & Disposal Ceremony conducted by the VFW and local Boy Scouts immediately following the program.
Before the ceremony, the American Legion Auxiliary #113 will host an Annual Flag Exchange from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM. Bring your worn, tattered, torn, or faded 3’ x 5’ American flag and receive a replacement flag while supplies last.
