Foster care and adoption - Buckner provides the training and resources needed to become a family to a child for a season through foster care or a forever family through domestic foster care or adoption. Children in these programs are most often referred through the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services due to experiencing abuse, neglect or abandonment. We also respond to mothers exper

iencing an unplanned pregnancy with counseling and support. Single Parents - We provide single-parent families the opportunity to live in a safe, secure environment while completing their educational or vocational goals and learning the skills they need to be self-sufficient. Families are provided support through access to affordable housing, financial assistance, counseling, spiritual growth and case management services. Call 936-637-3300 to learn more about this life-changing ministry. Foster Youth Aging Out Services - Our support programs are provided for current and former youth in state foster care. The goal of the aging out program is to provide training, support and guidance to youth graduating from foster care that will enhance their ability to transition into independent living. In Texas, more than 1,000 youth age out of foster care each year.

When youth age out of the foster care system between 18 to 23 years old, they are vulnerable to addiction, human trafficking and homelessness. With little support, former foster youth are left to navigate from adolescence to adulthood on their own.

For National Youth Aging Out Day, you can help by fostering or adopting a teen through Waiting Texas Children and providing mentorship for youth who may not have a positive person in their life.

This year, committee members have introduced six bills to modernize the John H. Chafee Foster Care Program for Successful Transition to Adulthood (“Chafee”) to improve outcomes for youth aging out of foster care by improving resources and access to housing, education and training programs. The program currently provides support to foster youth and former foster youth, ages 14 to 21, as they transition to adulthood and independence.

Several years ago, FYi (Foster Youth to Independence) vouchers were introduced to help limit out-of-pocket housing costs. Buckner provides these vouchers through our FYi program.

With the expansion of services proposed in the new legislature, former foster youth will have the opportunity to receive more services up to the age of 26.

Foster care is kingdom work. The late hours, the unknown, the procedures. We know how hard our foster families work to create a safe and loving environment for all kids. That’s why we commit to walking alongside families through counseling, resources, training, finances, prayer, and more, often going above and beyond what is required.

In 2025, there were over 500 children in foster care in Lufkin. There is still a great need for foster families. May is National Foster Care Month and a great time to consider opening your home to a child.

If you want to learn more, we encourage you to join our free virtual information meeting. You can learn more about Buckner and foster care as well as ask questions. Will you join us?

As a first-time mom in a new city, Perla felt overwhelmed and alone. But she found hope at Buckner in East Texas.

By furthering her education, attending parenting classes, and going through counseling, Perla found community and confidence. After the birth of her second son, Perla was also grieving loved ones who had passed away. Counseling at Buckner helped her address her grief and in turn strengthened her relationships with her family and two sons.

Today, now nearly a decade later, Perla and her family are thriving, with a more stable, joyful life — planning and saving for the future, raising sons who are thriving in school, and sharing the hope they found as a family with their community. “I enjoyed every class, and the things that I have learned about myself through counseling,” Perla said. “Our family is stronger and more united now.”
