Tomorrow will be Engine 1’s last parade as a piece of apparatus for the Town of Monson. It is 30 years old and we were able to keep it 10 years past its recommended service life through an excellent maintenance program. We decided at the last minute to put it in the parade this year not because it’s the nicest looking or the best engine we have. We decided to put it in because it has served the citizens of this community year after year flawlessly. I have asked our department mechanic John Milne to drive it in the parade. John joined the department in 1980 and served as a firefighter and a pump operator until he turned 65. In MA firefighters cannot work past the age of 65 without a special exemption. John has probably experienced some of the biggest fires engine 1 has responded to and it is his favorite truck in the fleet. It is because of his hard work that we are still operating this truck today. Please come out to the Monson summerfest parade tomorrow say hi to John and help give engine 1 a proper send off.
