It's been a hot moment since we last posted here at The Ludingtonville Project but we wanted to give an update on what's been happening since. First off, THANK YOU! We've only been actively online for six months now and have over 3000 followers in that short time frame. We've done this based solely on volunteers and donations of equipment, content, and especially in the man hours involved digitizing and restoring film. We'll continue to be a not-for-profit passion project that will always share freely our restored local history with the entire community.

Second, we're currently working on two projects at the moment which creates a lull in public visual activity. The first project is a short documentary on the 50 year anniversary of the construction of the Ludington Pumped Storage Facility (a huge thank you to Charlie Cole for so much regarding this project). The second project comes via our recent acquisition of never before publicly seen 1952 color film from the Ludington State Park archives. It is from Operation Facelift. A community wide effort of 1000 residents to restore and upgrade the State Park in trying times. It is the operation, according to current State Park manager Jim Gallie, that saved the park for future generations. We hope to start diving into this remarkable film as soon as possible.

Even if it's just a simple "thank you" in the comment section from time to time knowing that you appreciate the work we do that's all the payment we require to keep our nostalgic fire burning to bring you these great moments from our collective Ludingtonville past back to life!

Once again, thank you all,
Tom Oele

The Ludingtonville Project continues to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the construction of the Ludington Pumped Storage Facility with more great color images from it's past. These awesome color photos are from the Ludington State Park's archive via Jim Gallie, the State Park's manager. One photo shows the shoreline prior to the massive construction project while the other shows the very beginnings (possibly 1969) of the project.

Once again from the amazing Bortell family film collection (see story in previous post) comes this restored 1930's B&W film footage. This time we actually get to see the earliest known film of a Bortell's fish fry right at Bortell's Landing, now Summit Park! The two fish frys show Justin "Dutt" Bortell doing the frying. He's one of the two sons of Uriah Bortell, the founder of the iconic local establishement. Also in the film we see a brief glimpse of Epworth Heights and what appears to be a Sunday drive over an unknown steel bridge and into a town at the base of a hill with what appears to be a civil war monument. Can our eagle eyed Ludingtonville community make out where this might be? Enjoy! 's Fisheries

Please share among our community:

"CALLING ALL FORMER LUDINGTON BONSER'S EMPLOYEES...We are having a reunion on July 6th (2019) at Waterfront Park. It will be simple...bring chair and whatever you want to eat/drink. It is during Ludrock, so there will be music. Family and friends are welcome, of course. Haven't set a time yet, so more details to follow. Any photos or newspaper clippings would be great. PM me if you have questions."

In the 1980's an elderly gentleman, who said he was a long time Epworth Heights resident, walked into Bortell's Fisheries. He handed the family a video tape that he claimed contained transferred vintage film from an early Bortell's lakeside fish fry as well as other scenes from the area. What this unknown man in fact passed on was a treasure trove of moving images from the 1920's to the 1950's in both B&W and color! The Bortell family has allowed The Ludingtonville Project access to this tape to try and restore, archive, and freely share these astonishing images with the community. This is the first of that collection we have restored to the best of our ability and may be the oldest moving picture footage we have ever seen of the Ludington area. With no context or information we ask for any and all input from what you may see in this film. In the meantime, enjoy this very special look into Ludington's past! Bortell's Fisheries

1969...50 years ago this summer work began on what would become known as the "big hill south of the city". The Consumer's Project construction celebrates it's five decade anniversary this year. The Ludingtonville Project is currently working on a short documentary that will include footage of the area before, during, and immediately after the construction, an incredible visual journey of the transformation of the entire area. We also have recovered pieces of an original massive locally hand painted construction sign that once stood watch over the progress. "Reservoir Constructors" can be made out from the bottom piece but we can't make out the top piece. Maybe the community can provide information about this? Maybe even insight into "Vern" the artist whose signature still is clearly visible on the sign!

1898 is when Uriah Bortell started what would now become a 121 year old six generation Ludingtonville iconic business. Located on Lakeshore Drive just south of Consumer's Project and north of Bass Lake, the Bortell family has been smoking and selling fried fish for the locals and all the summer tourists that have passed their way since. The Ludingtonville Project is in the beginning phases of working with the Bortell family to share more of their incredible story in the coming months with our community through photographs and hopefully restored 90 year old film footage of the area. Until then remember Bortell's is open now through Labor Day, and we highly suggest you try their smelt dinner...our personal fave!
