The State of Michigan is currently under a “Red Flag” Warning. This means that NO fires are currently allowed, including recreational fires. This is issued directly from the Governor and is above and beyond a standard “burn ban”, which only applies to open burning.

We would like to recognize and thank one of our own as he retires from the Pere Marquette Fire Department. Thomas Johnston.

His career in emergency services began in 1989 as a full-time paramedic/ER tech, followed by joining a volunteer fire department in 1991. He brought that wealth of knowledge, experience, and commitment with him when he joined Pere Marquette Fire Department in 2018.

Throughout his time with us, he has been a valued member of our team—always willing to share his expertise, lend a hand, and help make those around him better.

On behalf of the entire Pere Marquette Fire Department, thank you for your years of service, dedication, and everything you’ve done for our department and community. Your impact will not be forgotten.

In what seems to be a yearly tradition now at FDIC, the fellas bumped into our old friend Fred. Fred is doing well and works for a major fire equipment supplier in the northeast. Hasn’t changed a bit still as energetic and outgoing just like when he was serving PMFD. He’s also serving as an Asst Chief with a busy fire department in Pennsylvania.

Tonight’s department training focused on our SCBA:

self contained breathing apparatus

First we started with “back to the basics” and talked about the construction and functionality of our SCBA.

Next we focused on a special technique that firefighters can use in a situation when they become low on air. Buddy breathing where firefighters are able to hook into each others air pack and share air until a rescue is made or the firefighters exit the environment they are in.

Firefighter #1 acted as the downed firefighter trapped in a building, while the second- #2 firefighter had to find them and connect the EBSS under blacked out conditions.

The focus on tonight’s training is to get back to the basics, but also throw in some real world situations to apply what you have learned.

We are accepting applications! Stop in at the township office and ask for a firefighter application.

ALL training is provided free of charge and provided to the applicant.

Congratulations to all of the cadets! Building the future of Mason County “Never Give Up, Never Stop”
