George County Sheriff's Office Investigating Fatal Vehicle Crash
George County, Mississippi —On Saturday, August 29, 2026, at approximately 9:13 p.m., deputies with the George County Sheriff's Office responded to a vehicle crash on Rocky Creek Road.

The driver of the vehicle sustained injuries and was transported by helicopter to USA Hospital for medical treatment.

The passenger, identified as Kandice Shivers of Lucedale, Mississippi, was pronounced deceased at the scene by George County Coroner DeeAnn Murrah.

Sheriff Mitchell Mixon stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Ms. Shivers during this difficult time. We also ask that the public allow our investigators the time
necessary to thoroughly investigate this tragic crash and determine exactly what occurred.”

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. This is an ongoing investigation, and no further information is available at this time.

The George County Sheriff’s Office is excited to announce that our 11th Annual Blue Line Toy Drive is officially up and running! 💙

For 11 years, this outreach has helped make Christmas a little brighter for George County families who may need a little extra help during the holiday season. The best part? Everything stays right here in George County!

With the help of the wonderful teachers and counselors in George County Schools, we are able to identify and assist children from Kindergarten through 6th grade who could use a little extra Christmas cheer. 🎅🎄

The Blue Line Toy Drive is made possible through the George County Sheriff’s Office 501(c)(3) Benefit Fund, and we truly could not continue this tradition without the incredible support of our community.

George County Sheriff's Office Announces Arrests in Vulnerable Adult Neglect Investigation

The George County Sheriff's Office has announced the arrests of Robert Leonard and Mary Bernadette Leonard, both of the Howell
community, following a lengthy investigation into the alleged neglect of an elderly vulnerable person.

On June 30, 2025, the George County Sheriff's Office received a report from a family member of an elderly victim alleging severe neglect that ultimately resulted in the victim being hospitalized.

Following an extensive investigation, warrants were issued for both Robert and Mary Leonard charging each with Abuse or Neglect of a Vulnerable Person.

On August 28, 2026, both Leonard's turned themselves in to George County Sheriff's Office investigators. They were arrested and transported to George County Justice Court, where they
appeared before Judge Marty Davis. Judge Davis set a $2,000 commercial bond for each individual.

Sheriff Mitchell Mixon stated, “The elderly and vulnerable members of our community deserve to be treated with dignity, care, and respect. Allegations involving the neglect of a vulnerable
person are taken extremely seriously by this Sheriff's Office. I commend our investigators for their diligence and commitment to seeing this investigation through to its conclusion.”

The charges and allegations contained in this release are accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

George County Sheriff's Office Makes Arrest Following Property Damage, Arson and Animal Cruelty Investigation

On August 14, 2026, George County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the Basin community regarding a report of a woman allegedly damaging and burning property belonging to a homeowner.

Deputies identified the woman as Maria Lewis, 55, of Mobile, Alabama. Investigators determined that Lewis had been staying at the residence and was in the process of being evicted by the homeowner. During the incident, Lewis allegedly damaged several thousand dollars' worth of property and set fire to other items belonging to the homeowner.

During the investigation, it was also alleged that Lewis placed her small dog inside a carrier and left the animal in nearby woods without food or water. The dog was discovered by a neighbor the following day.

Lewis was arrested and initially charged with Felony Malicious Mischief and Felony Arson, 3rd Degree. She was subsequently charged with Simple Cruelty to Animals (Misdemeanor).

Lewis appeared before Justice Court Judge Mike Bullock, who set bond at $20,000 for Malicious Mischief and $25,000 for Arson, 3rd Degree.

Sheriff Mitchell Mixon stated, “This incident is a reminder that we will take allegations of criminal damage, arson, and animal cruelty seriously. Our deputies and investigators worked to identify the circumstances surrounding this incident and hold the appropriate person accountable. We are also thankful that the animal was discovered and that a neighbor took action to ensure its safety.”

All charges are allegations, and Lewis is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The court system or the facility handles any process involving an inmate's release, bond, or placement on an ankle monitor. These matters are NOT handled over the phone, and you will not be asked to make a payment over the phone to arrange an inmate’s release or placement on an ankle monitor.

If you receive a call like this, do not provide personal or financial information. Hang up and contact the correctional facility where your family member is being housed directly if you have questions or concerns.
