📚 On April 24, 1800, John Adams signed an act of Congress that set aside $5,000 to purchase such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress.

📚 That decision created the Library of Congress, which began with just 740 books and three maps housed in the new Capitol Building.

📚 After the British burned the original collection during the War of 1812, Thomas Jefferson helped rebuild it by selling his personal library of 6,487 books to the government.

📚 Today, it has grown into the largest library in the world--a symbol of our nation’s commitment to knowledge and often called the “research room” of America or the Nation's Library.

Celebrating National Library Week and the 250th Anniversary of the US!

On April 8, 1864,
the U.S. Senate passed the 13th Amendment to the Constitution with a 38-6 vote, exceeding the required two-thirds majority to abolish slavery. This vote marked the first major step toward abolishing slavery. The vote occurred during the Civil War, following the Senate Judiciary Committee's submission of the amendment earlier in February 1864. The amendment was subsequently ratified by the necessary number of states and adopted on December 18, 1865.
