Good afternoon! I hope everyone is safe and dry this afternoon.

The attached photo was taken this morning on East Wilkerson Ferry Road (the road to my home). That’s the creek (Big Creek) across the road, not the river.

The gentleman in the photo is walking out to the intersection in Buzzard Roost in order to catch a ride to work. If you zoom in, you will notice he’s carrying his work boots. I offered to take him through the floodwaters but he declined. He said he has a truck at home and wasn’t willing to risk it, so he also wasn’t willing to ask me to risk mine.

The other photo attached to this post is of McDonald Road. That’s where the gentleman lives. He’s already walked over a mile and has about another mile to go—and a good portion of that walk has been/will be through floodwaters, but he needs to get to work. Folks, this is a good example of the American Spirit.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “if the Good Lord’s willing and the creek don’t rise”. Well, the creek rose but it’s not gonna stop this guy from getting to work.

My hat’s off to him!!

Good morning! I hope everyone is safe and dry this morning.

The attached photo is on the road to Josephine Sandbar. Suffice to say you simply CAN’T get to the sandbar at this time.

You WON’T be able to get there this weekend.

I DON’T think you’ll be able to get there next weekend either.

As for the 4th of July Weekend, it doesn’t look promising at this point. You’ll probably be able to get to the sandbar but there probably won’t be much of a sandbar when you get there. I’ll keep you up to date as things progress.

For the record, the Pascagoula River is already the highest it’s been this year and it's still rising.

Again, stay safe and stay dry if you can.

Have a great weekend!!

Good morning!

This morning's post is simply a reminder that "Swamp Talk" will be broadcast tomorrow evening in an abbreviated version. While the normal broadcast time is from 4pm until 6pm, tomorrow's show will start at 5pm and run for only an hour. The reason? The ongoing College World Series in Omaha. We will be back to the normal broadcasting schedule the following week.

Please join me tomorrow at 5pm for another hour of discussion about God's wonderful and majestic creation right here in our own back yard.

Try to stay dry today,

Davy

Good morning!

A couple of things this morning:

First, the weekend is upon us. It looks to be a typical Summer weekend. Lots of sunshine with the occasional afternoon thundershower. A good time to spend outside. The river is still falling slowly so the low-lying sandbars (such as Josephine Sandbar) are still partially covered by the river. However, a fair amount of sandbar is exposed. In other words, the conditions aren't ideal for a sandbar weekend but it'll do. So, grab your beach chair and head to the sandbar.

Secondly, this is the second Saturday of June and that means "Second Saturday" in Lucedale starting at 5pm. Folks, "Second Saturday" has turned into a really big affair in our small town. Main Street will be packed with vendors and customers from near and far. We (Gwen and I) will have a booth at the event. I will be selling and autographing my three books and Gwen will be showcasing many of her wonderful embroidery creations. Stop by and visit.

Lucedale will also be celebrating its 125th anniversary on Saturday. Events will be held all over Lucedale. You can contact the city or the chamber of commerce for details. In other words, this Saturday will be a big day in Lucedale.

Lastly, I have a programming note for "Swamp Talk". Since WRBE will be engaging with Westwood One to bring you the College World Series from Omaha, there has been a change in the scheduling on "Swamp Talk" for next week. The broadcast will be starting at 5pm instead of the normal 4pm starting time and the program will only last an hour in order to avoid the college baseball games. Please tune in at 5pm this coming Wednesday.

Have a glorious weekend!!

Good morning!

We have now rescheduled our 50th Anniversary celebration on the Josephine Sandbar. The new date is 19 September.

Since the actual transfer date was 22 September 1976, the new date better coincides with the actual anniversary.

Please plan to join us as we celebrate the saving of the swamp almost exactly fifty years ago.

Good morning!

I want to remind you that "Swamp Talk" will air this afternoon from 4pm until 6pm. Our inaugural broadcast last Wednesday went fairly well. I have received quite a bit of positive feedback. We had listeners from as far away as Minnesota and Colorado.

This week will be even better. Our special guest is Becky Stowe of The Nature Conservancy. Becky and I go way back as does my history with The Nature Conservancy. We will be discussing their ongoing mission to conserve some of our last wild places.

Please join us this afternoon on WRBE (106.9 FM) for a couple of hours of informative and entertaining discussion about conservation.

Good morning!

The MDWFP graded the road to Upper Rhymes Lake, Lower Rhymes Lake, and Josephine Sandbar yesterday. It looks good and drives better. Gone are all the potholes that were pounding the undercarriage of your car. It is now a smooth ride.

At this point, the sides of the road have been bushhogged, the camping and parking areas have been mowed, and the road has been graded. It's all looking good.

Now, if the river would just cooperate. The water level remains stubbornly high, covering a substantial portion of the sandbar. I guess we'll just have to be patient with the water level.

In any case, everything but the nature trail is looking good. I absolutely love reporting progress.

Good morning!

An update on yesterday’s post:

The MDWFP removed the tree yesterday across the road to Josephine Sandbar. Also, while they were there, they bushhogged both sides of the road and mowed the camping and parking areas.

Thanks guys.

Unfortunately, the river is still a bit high to enjoy the sandbar. It is still my recommendation that you make other plans for this weekend.

Good morning!

This post is an update on access and condition of Josephine Sandbar in relationship to the upcoming weekend. To put things succinctly, I wouldn’t be planning a trip to the sandbar this weekend.

The water level across the low-water crossing on Mound Slough is now low enough to allow transit by a truck or SUV. I wouldn’t be comfortable crossing with a car. The level is steadily dropping and should be crossable by a car by this weekend.

The main current issue is a couple of trees across the road. I’ve notified the “Area Manager” but don’t know when they’ll be removed. I’ll let you know when I’ve confirmed the road is clear. Also, you need to drive really slowly to avoid the pot holes.

Lastly, if you COULD get to the sandbar, you would find there’s not much of a sandbar available because the river is still too high for it to be exposed.

I would suggest waiting another week before making any Josephine Sandbar plans.

Have a great weekend!!
