Did you know that the Shawnee State Park Nature Center is home to a beautiful Copperhead?

Today we took her out for a soak to help treat her ophidiomycosis, a common snake fungal disease. We talked to many guests about treating snakes with kindness and caution as they play an important role in our ecosystem.

Copperheads have the dubious distinction of having bitten more people in the United States than any other venomous snake, yet fewer snakebite deaths are attributed to the copperhead. Because the amount of venom injected during a bite is not enough to seriously hurt a healthy adult, the bite is rarely fatal.

Their coloration not only serves as excellent camouflage, but also makes them one of Ohio’s most beautiful reptiles. When encountered, copperheads are usually
content to lie motionless or retreat if given the chance. But if aroused, they will vibrate their tail rapidly and strike wildly.

Copperheads are widely scattered throughout most of unglaciated Ohio and are one of only two venomous snakes found in Scioto County.

Check out all the snakes at the nature center from 12-3 on Wednesdays through Saturdays.

Yesterday we went back to Portsmouth East Elementary to help with a student service project. After learning the harm that litter has on our environment, these kiddos pulled out over 80lbs of trash from a nearby trail! Special thanks to Scioto-Lawrence Solid Waste District for the supplies and to science teacher Angie Haney for inspiring these students to be eco-mindful.

We were so excited to set up at the Green Ag and Natural Resources Day! Scott set up next to Division of Wildlife with our furs and skulls and Jess set up a table on preventing plastic pollution and how researchers use dragonfly larvae to test for PFAS.
