Today, the Town of Lucama joins communities across our nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We honor the innocent victims, the brave first responders, and the countless individuals who demonstrated courage, strength, compassion, and unity in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

Twenty-five years later, we pause to remember, reflect, and honor all those whose lives were forever changed.

🏛️ A NEW VISION FOR 110 S. MAIN STREET

After careful consideration and review, the Lucama Board of Commissioners has determined that the cost of renovating the historic “bank building” located at 110 S. Main Street would place too great a financial burden on the Town.

After weighing the options, the Board has determined that demolition is the best course of action for the property. The property will remain under the ownership of the Town of Lucama.

While this decision marks the end of one chapter for this property, it also creates an opportunity to look toward the future. 🌱

With assistance from the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Rural Development Division, along with valuable input from our community, the Town will develop a Strategic Economic Development Plan to help determine the best future use for this site.

💬 We want to hear from you! What would you like to see at 110 S. Main Street? What use do you believe would best serve our residents, strengthen our downtown, and contribute to the future of Lucama?

Your ideas, feedback, and vision are an important part of this process. Together, we can help determine what comes next for this property and for our community.

🚽 WHAT NOT TO FLUSH! 🚽

Help us keep Lucama’s wastewater system running smoothly! 💧

The only things that should ever be flushed are the 3 P’s: P*e, P**p & (Toilet) Paper. 🧻

Please NEVER flush wipes—even those labeled “flushable”—paper towels, cotton swabs, dental floss, or other items that can clog pipes and cause costly problems.

A simple reminder: If it doesn’t belong in the toilet, please put it in the trash! 🗑️

Thank you for helping keep our community’s sewer system working properly! ❤️

📢 WHAT IS A RIGHT-OF-WAY?

A Friendly Reminder from the Town of Lucama

Have you ever wondered why there is space between the road and your property—or who is responsible for that area?

You may be looking at a right-of-way (ROW).

A right-of-way is an area of land reserved for public transportation and infrastructure purposes. Depending on the road, a right-of-way may include the roadway, shoulders, drainage areas, sidewalks, utility lines, ditches, and other areas needed for the operation, maintenance, or improvement of the road.

📍 WHERE ARE RIGHTS-OF-WAY IN LUCAMA?

Rights-of-way can be found along public streets and roads throughout the Town of Lucama. However, the width and exact location of a right-of-way can vary from one road or property to another.

Lucama has both State-maintained roads and streets that are part of the Town's municipal street system. North Carolina law provides that NCDOT is responsible for the State Highway System within municipal limits, while municipalities are responsible for streets accepted into their municipal street systems. ([North Carolina General Assembly][1])

Important: A right-of-way does not necessarily mean the Town or NCDOT owns all of the land beside the road. In many cases, property ownership and the public right-of-way overlap differently depending on recorded deeds, plats, easements, and other documents.

🌳 WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

Right-of-way areas are important because they may be needed for:

• Road maintenance and repairs
• Drainage and ditches
• Water and sewer infrastructure
• Utility lines and poles
• Sidewalks and other public improvements
• Future road improvements or widening
• Safe access for maintenance and emergency work

Because of this, residents should be mindful before placing structures, landscaping, fences, signs, or other items near the roadway. What may appear to be part of a front yard may actually be within a public right-of-way or easement.

❓ NOT SURE WHERE YOUR PROPERTY'S RIGHT-OF-WAY ENDS?

Please don't guess!

The exact location can vary by property and road. If you have questions about a right-of-way near your property, please contact Town Hall before making improvements or placing permanent items near the roadway.

The Town of Lucama wants our citizens to understand their property, our public infrastructure, and how our community works. We hope this information helps clear up something that isn't always well known!

North Carolina law also gives municipalities authority over public streets within their corporate limits, subject to streets under the control of the Board of Transportation. ([North Carolina General Assembly][2])

💧 GOOD NEWS — WATER IS BACK ON! 💧

The Town of Lucama would like to inform customers at the intersection of Blalock Road and Little Rock Church Road that water service has been turned back on.

🚰 Flushing will continue until approximately 3:30 PM at Little Rock Church Road and Granite Drive.

👕 A friendly reminder: While flushing is taking place, customers may want to wait until after 3:30 PM to wash white or light-colored clothing, as temporary water discoloration may occur while the lines are being flushed.

We appreciate your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we continue this important waterline work.

Thank you for your continued patience! ❤️
