As "Baby Season" gets underway, please consider donations to the Wildlife Center. Your donations are tax-deductible. Our workload is staggering over the spring and summer months with admissions of orphaned, injured and displaced wild birds and mammals. If you can volunteer, contact the Center at (806) 799-2142.

SPWRC, Inc. was established in 1988 and is still going strong. We are not a business - we are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We have permits from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service but the Center receives NO funding whatsoever from either regulatory agency.

I started this page on Facebook a long time ago and probably before I retired...if you are looking for the most current updates, follow the SPWRC page that Executive Director Sarah Hollers writes and keeps current.
An update on my book - "The Mockingbird Chronicles" - about the early years of SPWRC that I founded in 1988 and is about some of my craziest and most interesting adventures - how I procrastinated getting a permit, incorporating the Center, etc. etc. It has 60
'short-ish' chapters and is meant to entertain and educate people about wildlife, and in particular, the species we have here and the difference our Center has made in West Texas and often far beyond.
I trust Amazon to do a good job with publishing, but when I get my chapters back to look over, all of a sudden there are lots of errors ...a word here, a punctuation mark there, and it has been frustrating. One word can make a difference in the meaning of the sentence, so we go back to the drawing board. I hoped it would be out by Christmas, but right now I doubt it.
AI may be one of the problems......

Congratulations to Animal Medical Center of Lubbock in the KCBD "Best of the West" 2022 Competition. The vets and staff there have helped the Wildlife Center with their care, advice and expertise since 1988!

After months of trying to update our website, it's finally up and running again...a few things still need to be adjusted, but it will be done soon. Webs.com was bought by Vistaprint.com and I was never notified...the person who built our site (a TTU Student) graduated (and their ttu.edu emails then go away) and he likely got that notification that he never saw either. Finally, after much frustration, my grandson Jack Davies, A Computer Science major at TTU, made a few calls, changed our credentials, and we're up and running again...finally! Stop by and visit: www.spwrc.org Read about our Great Horned Owl patient and "Puddles" the lucky duck!

Gail Barnes delivers a new batch of Barn Owl chicks to our surrogate parents of many years, "Mean" and "Nasty!"

Four owlets were delivered for Mean and Nasty to raise. That raspy sound is made by the owlets themselves. Godspeed you little weirdos!

The annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) was held Saturday, December 19th. Rob and 20 others counted in their prearranged locations. The 2020 CBC yielded 139 bird species this year. (The record low for the
count is 57 species; the record high is 141). The compiler, Anthony Hewetson, was pleased, given the drought conditions this year. I'll keep his list a few days, so if anyone is interested in the list of bird species seen, email me at [email protected] and put Christmas Bird Count in the subject line. There will be one more count at White River Lake January 2nd, 2021.

It's very cold right now, but even on the chilliest of days, songbirds appreciate a bowl of fresh water. You'll be surprised at how fast they'll empty it. I also have a peanut butter feeder that I'm refilling twice a day right now (one Mockingbird is the most frequent visitor along with scads of little birds). I got it at Duncraft.com I also have a thistle feeder hanging and another one for small birds only filled with a good blend of wild bird seed that I'm also filling twice a day right now. Costco has a good quality wild birdseed blend - 40 pounds I think for about $15.00.🐦
