Dr Maggie Durham Announces Campaign for Texas House District 84
Democratic candidate prioritizes support for farmers, living-wage teacher salaries, affordable college access, and raising Texas’ national education ranking.

Maggie Durham officially announced her candidacy for Texas House District 84 yesterday, launching a campaign focused on strengthening rural communities, elevating Texas’ public education system, and expanding opportunities for students and families across the South Plains.

Durham, a long-time advocate for education and economic fairness, emphasized that Texas must do better for its children and its future.
“Texas should be a national leader in education, not hovering near the bottom. We owe our students and teachers so much more, and I intend to fight for the investment and respect they deserve,” she said.

Her campaign highlights three major priorities:

Supporting Texas Farmers
Durham pledges to champion policies that sustain and grow the region’s agricultural economy, providing support for family farms, improving access to resources, and ensuring farmers can continue feeding the state and nation.
“Our farmers are the backbone of West Texas. When we invest in them, we invest in the entire community,” she said.

Ensuring Living-Wage Teacher Salaries
Durham is committed to establishing teacher pay tied to a real living wage, so educators no longer have to work two or more jobs to make ends meet.
“We cannot improve education outcomes if we undervalue the very people responsible for teaching our children,” she said. “Paying teachers fairly is a direct investment in raising Texas’ education ranking and building a stronger future.”

Expanding College Affordability
Durham will advocate for lower tuition costs, expanded financial aid, and pathways to debt-free degrees and technical programs.
“Every student, whether they want to attend college, trade school, or pursue a technical career, deserves a fair chance without decades of debt,” Durham said.

Durham’s mission is clear: to strengthen Texas’ education system so the state rises in national rankings and provides a world-class education to every child.
“We can and must do better. Texas should be at the top of the nation, not settling for mediocrity. My campaign is about building a Texas where every student has the opportunity to excel,” she said.
