Friends and neighbors,
I wanted to provide you with an update on Zoning Case 3548, which involved a proposed A.I. data center.
The applicant has officially withdrawn the zoning request while it was under review by the Planning and Zoning Commission. The case did not advance to City Council. According to the applicant, the withdrawal was made so they can assemble a more detailed package and potentially submit a new zoning request in the future.
I want to acknowledge and thank everyone who reached out. Many of you raised serious and reasonable concerns, particularly regarding water usage, noise, power demand, potential impacts to electricity costs, and the very limited description of what the facility would actually entail. Those concerns were not fully addressed in the materials presented to Planning and Zoning.
While I support responsible business growth in Lubbock, including data centers and advanced technology projects, developments of this scale must be clearly defined, transparent, and accountable. Before I could support a project like this, it would need to provide thorough, concrete answers to the concerns raised and demonstrate how it would responsibly integrate with our city’s infrastructure, utilities, and surrounding neighborhoods.
At this time, there is no active zoning request for this project. If the applicant chooses to return, it would be treated as a new case, starting again with Planning and Zoning and allowing for public input before any consideration by City Council. I will continue to monitor the situation and keep you informed.
Thank you for your engagement and for advocating for the long term interests of our community. Please feel free to reach out if you have questions or additional thoughts.
Respectfully,
Brayden Rose
City Council, District 4
City of Lubbock
