We are so excited to announce that on June 11, 2025, the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance celebrated its 40th Anniversary at the Tilton School in Tilton, NH by presenting ten New Hampshire Preservation Alliance Achievement Awards.

Paula Gilman and Susan Kelley Leclerc, members of the First Baptist Church and Lower Gilmanton Community Club are thrilled to announce that the First Baptist Church of Lower Gilmanton was honored with this prestigious award for the Restoration and Stewardship of our Historic Church. The Preservation Alliance supports and encourages the revitalization and protection of historic buildings and places which strengthens communities and local economies. For 40 years the Preservation Alliance has recognized exemplary projects and people that illustrate these tenants.

We received this award for our efforts in the 6-year long restoration project and 10-year Stewardship of the First Baptist Church of Lower Gilmanton. Maintenance of beloved old buildings as you know is an ongoing task and this is what was accomplished during the restoration process:

Phase I, Began in 2019 and was completed in 2023. Restoration included extensive restoration of the foundation, belfry, new roof, restored chimneys and lined with metalbestos, and installation of code ADA access ramp. Extensive interior upgrades included refurbishing the twin antique woodstoves, and installation of code approved stove pipes. The electrical involved upgrading and replacing wiring chewed by mice; installing a new 100-amp main breaker panel and the installation of 2 ground rods.

Contractors for Phase I included Bedard Restoration & Preservation providing the assessment and guidance; Fifield Restoration & Relocation; Steppingstones Masonry; and LaPan’s Antique Stoves. Grants and generous individual donations, along with work by volunteers, made Phase I a great success.

Phase II, 2024 the final exterior restoration project concluded during the summer of unusually high heat and humidity. This restoration project included the exterior scraped of all loose and peeling paint; feathering out all edges of scraped paint and sand all bare wood; apply a full coat of Exterior Oil Wood Primer; fill and sand all holes and patches; replace broken and rotten clapboard; add trim in areas where it is missing; repair rotten section of trim with Liquid Wood Hardener and Wood Epoxy; prime all repairs with Exterior Oil Wood Primer; caulk all cracks and open seams; make minor repairs to window sills as needed; and apply one full coat of Sherwin Williams Duration finish paint.

The contractors for Phase II were Collins & Sons Electric and Perkins Professional Painting. A grant was obtained from the Globe Community Fund and many generous donations from individuals were received.

NH Preservation Alliance’s Seven to Save and Land & Community Heritage Investment Program lead the way for our grants. The Lower Gilmanton Community Club, a 501 © 3 nonprofit, was our sponsor. We are forever grateful to the many donors who contributed to our project.

The following is from the NH Preservation Alliance Awards ceremony:

Paula Gilman and Susan Kelley Leclerc led this project with great vision, enormous energy and attention to detail. This high-quality, community-driven preservation effort is a model for other communities. The Greek Revival-style church was built in 1842 to replace a 1774 meetinghouse that stood approximately one-half mile to the north of the current location. The 1774 structure’s timbers, sills and cut foundation stones were re-used in the National Register-listed structure. After over 180 years of services, suppers, christenings, weddings and funerals, the building needed comprehensive rehabilitation.

Using a building assessment as a road map and budget tool, the group tackled structural needs, wood repair, roofing, foundation leveling and painting. Ten bushels of bird nesting and dirt from the eave and belfry level were removed. Antique stove repair and accessibility improvements were completed.

Community fundraising matched and exceeded their LCHIP grant. Members of the First Baptist Church and the Lower Gilmanton Community Club, donated hundreds of volunteer hours (and cool snacks on hot summer workdays) to prepare this landmark for another century. Like the Bradford and Bartlett projects, this is a former Seven to Save listee that is now an award winner.

The project leader’s ancestors were instrumental in the founding of this place. Paula Gilman’s 8th great grandfather, Antipas Gilman along with John Meserve deeded to the First Baptist Church the land the Church now stands on. Paula grew up attending this church and Sunday School.

Susan Kelley Leclerc’s 6th great grandfather, Dr. Benjamin Kelley arrived in Gilmanton in 1802 and was instrumental in writing the Church’s Constitution along with others.

Our roots run deep in Lower Gilmanton. We are following in our forefather’s footsteps to maintain this Historic Church. We feel indebted to them and feel privileged to honor them in this way by preserving it for future generations.

CHRISTMAS SERVICE

What an amazing night we had~~!!! The Church was all aglow with candles in the windows, Poinsettias throughout and beautiful Christmas decorations. There were 71 adults and 15 children present - ages ranged from 3 months to 89 years old. We were thrilled to welcome new friends and reconnect with longtime families and friends.

Pastor Amy Gardner gave a lovely and touching service combined with the parishioners singing Christmas hymns. After the last hymn, we broke into Jingle Bells and in came Santa with his bag of presents.

Santa asked all the children to come sit in the front row while he told the Christmas story asking the children to participate. He then passed out $1.00 gold coins to each child. Now for the fun – PRESENTS and a chance to sit in Santa’s lap while parents snapped photos. Santa’s Elves handed out our Traditional Goodie Bags complete with Molasses Taffy popcorn balls. What a thrill.

There was hot cider and delicious treats in the vestry where people gathered to reconnect. One couple stated they had relatives that traveled 2 hours to be here. Another was thrilled to once again participate in this annual tradition just as he had when he was a child here 30 years ago.

The Church was filled with the warm glow of love and friendship.

June 13, 2024

The Lower Gilmanton Community Club has recently received a $5,000 grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation as requested by the Globe Community Fund. This grant will allow us to complete Phase II, the final phase of restoration, of the First Baptist Church in Lower Gilmanton – thus making it accessible for services, community use and education.

The First Baptist Church of Lower Gilmanton was established in 1773 and was relocated in 1842 to its present location on the knoll overlooking Lower Gilmanton. An historic and cultural landmark, the Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Each village in Gilmanton - Lower Gilmanton, Gilmanton Corners and Gilmanton Iron Works -has a distinctive center and defining features. There are several historic buildings and cultural resources that remain cornerstones of Lower Gilmanton, the First Village.

Significant 19th/early 20th century buildings should be reused or recycled for vital community use. Preserving historic buildings and cultural resources establish a sense of place that defines the character of our individual community in Lower Gilmanton.

The grant will help further the Lower Gilmanton Community Club’s mission to continue to dedicate all efforts to a better social life for the community as well as restoration and preservation of our historic and cultural resources so they may "live on" for future generations.

Since its inception in 1927, the Lower Gilmanton Community Club’s (LGCC) motto has been to “Promote a better social life in the community”. The club took it upon themselves to care for the Kelley Corner School House, the First Baptist Church, along with other historic buildings and cultural resources in Lower Gilmanton.
There is a long list of community projects the original LGCC performed. We are beholden to them, our ancestors ~ the mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, aunts and friends who have diligently throughout the years cared for Lower Gilmanton and its community. In this longstanding tradition, we are continuing the good work of our forbearers.

The First Baptist Church is an historic landmark that is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. In 2019 the Church was nominated for the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance’s Seven to Save which brings statewide attention to historic buildings in need of restoration. Also in 2019, the Church received a Land & Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP) grant for Phase I which began 5 years ago. The Church has also received a Globe Community Fund grant, donations from the Gilmanton Historical Society and individuals.

As we are nearing the end of Phase II, we are reaching out to family, friends and community to help us reach our goal of $40,000 – we have $20,000 more to go. Our goal all along has been to preserve this historic landmark that is the Cornerstone of Lower Gilmanton. Phase II will conclude the restoration of the First Baptist Church thus preserving it “to live on for future generations”.

Since its inception in 1927, the Mission of the Lower Gilmanton Community Club is "to continue to dedicate all efforts to a better social life for the community as well as preservation and restoration of our historic and cultural resources". Short History of the First Baptist Church

The First Baptist Church in Lower Gilmanton was organized in November 1773 and a Meetinghouse was erected in 1774 on the training field in Lower Gilmanton (now known as Frisky Hill). However, by 1841 the sixty-seven year old meetinghouse was in poor shape. The wardens of the Society called a special meeting on November 17, 1841 and it was decided to take down the present Meetinghouse and build a new one. Antipas Gilman and John Meserve, Wardens of the First Baptist Society, deeded the property where the current Church now sits on the Hill to the First Baptist Church. It was proposed to build a Meetinghouse forty by fifty feet with a belfry after the model of the Northwood Meetinghouse. The First Baptist Church was erected and completed November 2, 1842 and was dedicated the next day, November 3, 1842. The cost of the building was less than $1500 per the Gilmanton Town History published in 1845.

NOTE: For a complete history of the Church a booklet entitled “Lower Gilmanton Church History” by Florence Geddes is available for sale at the Academy Building, Tax Collector’s Office.
