Did you know that there are over 20 known tick species in Michigan? Most ticks live in forested and grassy areas where they wait to climb on a potential host when it brushes by them.

Once on a host, a tick typically climbs upward in search of a suitable site to attach and feed. Not all ticks carry diseases, but there are several species that are known to bite people and pets that might carry diseases.

You can help keep yourself and your pets safe by checking for ticks regularly after your outdoor adventures. You can also avoid ticks by staying on well-groomed trails and avoiding high grass, brush and fallen leaves. 🍂

Learn more about how to identify ticks and stay safe from them at Michigan.gov/mdhhs/safety-injury-prev/environmental-health/topics/mitracking/ticks.

This is a wonderful event being put on tomorrow by the Lowell Showboat Garden Club at the Englehardt/Lowell Branch - KDL to celebrate Arbor Day!

The Lowell Showboat Garden Club, together with John Ball Zoo Habitat Heroes, are sponsoring a special Celebration this Saturday, April 18, 2026, 1:00 p.m., at the Englehardt Library in Lowell!

Join John Ball Zoo and learn about why planting native trees and shrubs is one of the best things you can do to support native wildlife. Everyone who comes to this event will have the opportunity to take home a *FREE* tree or shrub to start supporting pollinators in their own yard or garden and become a Habitat Hero!
